The SHW Group of Houston presented designs of the Natatorium and Auditorium to the Victoria school board Thursday. Both buildings will be located on the site of the Memorial High School.
Both buildings would be located side by side off of Sam Houston Drive.
The natatorium and auditorium are a part of the $159 million bond that was approved by voters in May 2007.
"There is still some tweaking that has to be done to the budget before we can put the contracts up for bid," Rayce G. Boyter, AIA principal for SHW Group, said.
The current designs put the district at least six percent over budget, he said.
"Adjusting the plans on the auditorium has really been a challenge," Boyter said.
Final design plans should be ready to go to bid by the summer, he said. But board members were not impressed.
"We really need to get these projects started," Bernard Klimist, board vice president, said.
Boyter understood Klimist's concerns, but said the projects could not be started until the new high schools opened or the portables located behind MHS were moved.
"The portables are currently located on the grounds where the natatorium will be built," Boyter said.
Bob Moore, superintendent, said the portables could be moved in order for the construction to begin.
Klimist suggested that the board and Moore meet with the SHW Group to discuss the design and when contracts would be ready to go to bid. All members were in agreement.
O.C. Garza, City of Victoria spokesman, approached the board about participating on the city government channel.
He asked the board if they would consider purchasing a time slot on the government channel to air the school board meetings.
Board members said they thought it would be a great idea but would like to have further discussion about the purchasing a time slot.
