THUMBS UP

Thumbs up to Cinemark and whomever else makes possible The Metropolitan Opera series. Victoria is fortunate to have this excellent artistic opportunity.

A huge thumbs up to Tony Dungy, who just retired as coach of the Indianapolis Colts. Tony is the class of the NFL, a man dedicated to God, family and team. We'll miss you, Tony, and we wish you and your family all the best.

THUMBS DOWN

Thumbs down to the DeWitt County Road Commissioner in Yoakum whose job is to maintain the following roads: Immenhauser Rd., Hulse, Rd., Emil Blank Rd. and West Emil Blank Rd. These roads are in deplorable condition. They have become so narrow that meeting vehicles have to move into the grassy right-of-way to safely pass, potholes that can throw tires out of alignment are numerous, approaches to bridges and culverts are sunken on both sides, etc. If these roads had been maintained in a timely manner by using the money that the taxpayers have paid in over the years, these problems would be minimal. However, the road the commissioner lives on is well maintained! Previous commissioners managed to keep the roads in good condition.

Thumbs down to the Dallas Cowboys' Convict Corps. Another drunk player, another arrest. Jerry, let's change that uniform to one with black and white stripes. While we're at it, we'll also replace the star with a handcuff logo. That should boost team morale.

FROM THE EDITORIAL BOARD

THUMBS UP

Thumbs way up for the U.S. Coast Guard and the various police and rescue agencies of the city of New York for their quick work in getting all 155 passengers out safely after a disabled U.S. Airways jetliner ditched into the Hudson River after taking off from La Guardia Airport, a feat which the governor of New York called "a miracle on the Hudson."

Thumbs up for D.J. Williams of Port Lavaca, who at 79 years of age is still working hard to keep alive the dreams and aspirations of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. While citing some progress in race relations, Mr. Williams nevertheless says, "In my estimation, we still have a long way to go."

Thumbs up to Girl Scout cookies. Sure would like to see some of those cookies down here at the newspaper.

Thumbs up to the red wolves at the Texas Zoo. May they live a good and long life, and may they have many offspring to help save the species.

THUMBS DOWN

Thumbs way down on the continuing violence and deaths along the Gaza Strip, where Israeli bombardments and Hamas rocket attacks go on unabated, and no one seem serious about negotiating a case fire to save lives.

Thumbs down to the knuckleheads who have decided to paint graffiti on the trees in Riverside Park. Somebody should pay for this misdeed.

  • thumbs down...Cinemark12 credit card swipe check-in booths. The front panel is loose, it can't read a card, the tickets are short and fall between the wall and panel and there is congestion at the door.
