Volleyball isn't the only sport at Memorial accepting applications for a head coach after all.

The Victoria school district posted the head baseball coach opening on Thursday, a day after it was announced that Manuel Alvarado would replace Ralph Escalona.

"There was some miscommunication between central office and the athletic department," Victoria school district Executive Director of Human Resources Eloy Chapa said Thursday. "The athletic department was under the impression that the position had already been posted, but it had not. The position is now posted and anyone who is interested, Manuel included, can apply."

Alvarado, who has been named the interim head coach, is applying for the job.

While posting a job is not requuired by the state, Chapa said VISD requires it.

"It is our policy though that when we have an opening that we post it to give people within the school district and other people outside of the district an opportunity to apply for the position," Chapa said.

The Memorial baseball team begins practice on Jan. 30, which will likely speed up the process of hiring a new coach. Chapa said positions are usually open for 10 days before interviews are arranged, but with midyear searches interviews could be scheduled sooner.

Escalona, who resigned from the baseball position to focus on his role as the school district assistant athletic director, said the athletic department was notified of the mistake on Thursday morning.

The position has been posted on the VISD Web site along with the volleyball position that became open when Irma Gomez resigned.

  • Manuel Alvarado is the best man for the job. I cannot believe they would publically announce he's the new head coach and then retract. Actually I can. Very very unorganized. Maybe Mr. Escalona can help to organize the Vipers so this kind of nonsense won't happen again. Good luck Manny in getting the job.. AGAIN..! We are rooting for you!

  • I find it very interesting that Ms. Gomez has resigned even though she has said she did no wrong with regards to her involvment in club and that she was "supposedly" cleared of all wrong doing. Did she resign or was she forced to resign? Also did any one notice that the STj coach found a new job at Faith with no mention of why she left STJ?

  • The college vb coach who allegedly had a informal interview over the holidays will kill your sports programs.
does finly, chapa, escolona know the rules?!?!?  I will save you some legal fees. This vb guy may have coached attendance zone players already in camps and leagues.   violations.
A local organization is indirectly associated w/ this coach.  If i know then your volleyball mommas know.  Pick someone outside league play.
    ------
