The 34th Annual Veterinary Ranch Seminar will be held Friday, Jan. 23 at the Victoria Community Center. Registration starts at 8 a.m. and the free program is from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m.

A noon luncheon will feature keynote speaker Dr. Barry Dunn, executive director for the King Ranch Institute for Ranch Management addressing Ranching in Challenging Times: Lessons from the Past, Roadmaps for the Future.

Other topics include Dr. Larry Garrett, local veterinarian, presenting Ranching for Rednecks: Help! She's Down and She Can't Get Up. Dawna Michalke and Howard Helmers from the Texas Animal Health Commission will present The Hurricane Ike Experience: Lessons Learned for the Coastal Bend. Dr. Joe Paschal, Extension livestock specialist will give two presentations titled Bull Selection and Management and Estrus Synchronization and AI. Also, Dr. Mike Mabry, Area 8 Director of the Texas Animal Health Commission will speak about The Texas Animal Health Commission and Its Mission and lastly, Dr. Buddy Faries, Extension veterinarian will talk about Tick Control: The Battle of Getting Rid of Ticks in Pastures and Yards.

The seminar will result in credit of 1.5 hours of IPM CEU's for TDA Private Applicator License holders and 1.5 Beef Quality Assurance (BQA's) credits.

VEGETABLE PRODUCTION SEMINAR

The Victoria County Farmers' Market Association will host a vegetable production seminar for area farmers and backyard growers. The seminar will be held at the Victoria County Extension office, 442 Foster Field Drive, Feb. 6 from 1 to 4 p.m. with a general meeting of the Victoria Farmers' Market Association before the seminar. If you have time and a small parcel of land, there is an opportunity to make extra income through this venture.

Dr. Joe Masabni, Extension vegetable specialist will address: Proven Vegetable Production Techniques, Weed Control Options for Smaller Farmers and Tips for Producing Quality Tomatoes, Squash, Cantaloupes and Melons. Bob Hanks, local vegetable grower will demonstrate his vegetable record keeping system which includes a calendar with the zodiac signs if you want to plant by moon signs, a daily work log including expenses and income, a monthly summary report and a crop yield report for each vegetable grown. I will also address: Soil Testing for Optimum Yet Economical Yield. Credit will be given for two TDA pesticide CEU's: one in IPM and one in General.

GRAPE PRUNING WORKSHOP

The basics of grapevine pruning will be covered in this field meeting set for Feb. 11 from 2 to 4 p.m. at Tarkington Vineyard, 1715 Refugio Hwy., Victoria. A limited supply of free grape cuttings and graftwood will be available courtesy of Friench and Martha Tarkington.

Fritz Westover, viticulture extension associate for the Texas Gulf Coast region will be on hand to demonstrate correct grape pruning. Bring pruning shears, and dress appropriately for the day's weather.
