A perception is out there that the sports world is slowing down.

The thought among some is that sports is on hiatus and that it will return in the fall.

At least the people I'm friends with and related to believe that.

For the past couple of weeks every time I talk to a family member or a friend, they always ask me what I have to do now that football is over. They believe that I'm basically sitting around waiting until football season begins in August.

When that happens I hang up the phone and ignore their calls for the next week.

In truth, this is the busiest time in sports. We are in the thick of basketball season, golf gets underway, baseball and softball start in about a month and soccer starts district play in a week.

It's amazing though. People consistently believe that sports revolve around football when they talk with me.

Sure, I would be the first one to vote for yearlong football, but I really enjoy this time of year with all the variety.

One of the top stories going on right now is the Memorial Lady Vipers basketball team.

The Lady Vipers are 4-3 in District 27-5A play after winning their first district game away from the friendly confines of the MHS senior campus gym. Memorial beat Corpus Christi King on Friday after falling behind early. The Lady Vipers remain in good position to earn a playoff berth and the win in Corpus Christi will come back to help them.

The team continues to play streaky basketball, but with an experienced group of girls, it's my prediction the team takes at least the fourth seed out of the district. The reason for my confidence is because of the ability of Krysta Martinez, Amber Flowers, Kaelynn Reyes and Breanna Jones. The four players turned it up down the stretch last season, and are capable of even greater things this year. All four will have to start playing more consistently, but those who have watched this group know they can do it.

Memorial soccer

This weekend I covered the Memorial Vipers soccer team in Georgetown and witnessed a slow 1-0 loss to Austin Anderson. The Vipers are now 1-5 on the season and are need of some offensive firepower. Still, I have little doubts that this team can turn around their season and make the playoffs. The team is playing great defense and when they return to health the goals will start coming.

The Lady Vipers were coming off a VISD Crossroads Tournament, but dropped three straight games in the Round Rock tournament. The team went without a goal in the tournament, but has the firepower to turn it up in district.

Both teams have facets of the game to work on this week in practice, but the potential is there for both teams to win district titles.

Baseball, softball looming

The Memorial baseball program had an interesting week to say the least. On Wednesday it was announced Manuel Alvarado would take over for Ralph Escalona as the head coach, but then on Thursday the job reopened because of a Victoria school district policy to post all jobs.

The job did not reopen because of anything Alvarado did. He deserves the job and I'm hoping it is formally announced this week that the interim head coach tag is taken off. Alvarado has 13 years of coaching experience and has knows the players that begin practice in two weeks. He is the best fit for the position.

And in case you missed it, we also have Jerheme Urban, a Stroman graduate, playing in the Super Bowl in two weeks.
