Who are the most powerful movers and shakers in the Crossroads?

Top lawmen? A downtown businesswoman? An outspoken politician, savvy executive or effective philanthropist?

The Advocate wishes to answer that question, and the newspaper wants your input to do so.

This new feature, called the "10 Most Powerful in the Crossroads," begins by asking you to help us form a list of candidates.

"Understanding power is at the heart of good reporting," said Advocate Editor Chris Cobler. "We want to analyze who makes things happen in the Crossroads region."

To be considered powerful - defined, in part, as having great authority or influence - candidates must simply get things done in the Crossroads. You decide who fits that description.

The only caveats? Candidates must live in Victoria, Jackson, Lavaca, DeWitt, Goliad, Refugio, Calhoun, Wharton or Matagorda counties. And they must be alive.

Simply send us a list of the five Crossroads residents you believe to be the most powerful. You remain anonymous.

You can call to offer your votes, or mail, e-mail or post your votes online.

During the next two weeks, your votes will be counted to form the list of the 20 most powerful in the region. A story, set to publish Sunday, Feb. 1, will release the names on that list.

Then, the Advocate will ask you to narrow that list to 10 by again voting by any means possible. Voting during this second stage ends Saturday, Feb. 28.

Once the "10 Most Powerful in the Crossroads" is determined, we'll publish in-depth profiles about each person who made the list - beginning with the 10th Most Powerful and working backward to No. 1.

Not only will you have a say in crowning this region's most powerful residents, you'll get an up-close look at the people who influence your life.

  • And just who backed up Azalea to borrow $2+million from an out of state bank for a property worth less than half that amount?

Anybody got the balls to tackle that one?

    January 18, 2009 at 8:32 p.m.
  • Ah, yes... our local slum lord, Mr. Wayne is definetly influential. However, I don't consider such a person worthy of this list.

    January 18, 2009 at 8:21 p.m.
  • Only 3.2 million roughly LOL that's amazing, I didn't know that.

  • Yes. In 2006 when JW owned it the assessed value was $938,330. In 2007 after Azalea bought it the assessed value was $4,150,000. Dang...that's a big jump.

  • He is so powerful that the VicAd is scared of him. They are afraid to even print his name or that of his dumby holding company takes a planned bankruptcy and screws his creditors.

  • I agree allfiredup!
James Wayne should be put on a train out of this town!
Why does the city allow him to have so many abandoned buildings. I have been in several of his buildings for business purposes and they all are in terrible condition, they stink, and are in need of updating... Nasty walls and not to mention so many vacant ones. I think there must be a curse... notice how many of his tenants who try to open a small business are never successful?!

    January 18, 2009 at 1:37 p.m.
  • Hummm....re schools, school board; re city, mayor and city council; re county, county judge and commissioners court; re having the lowest property tax bill...James Wayne.

    January 18, 2009 at 12:22 p.m.
  • Agreed....though I don't think they are really taken that seriously by most citizens.

  • I vote for the Advocate Editorial Board. They control the print media in this town. They decide what news to print, and how to present it. Their "viewpoints", which are supposed to be restricted to the editorial page, continually find their way into the content of news stories which, in turn, can influence what people believe.
