Editor, the Advocate:
I agree with Rawley Brown that the issue of when life begins is not the fundamental issue in the abortion debate. But while framing the issue, Mr. Brown espoused a dubious position: He claimed that the pro-life side "(put) the privilege of the one before the rights of the many."
How so, Mr. Brown? If abortion on demand were revoked, how would those rights be infringed? You could review the Constitution at length and not find one individual right that would be at risk. Furthermore, it's hard to imagine a more egregious perversion of the term "privilege" than when Mr. Brown calls a fetus privileged. Considering our abhorrent legal standard of unlimited dominion over the fetus, it's laughable to argue that the fetus is somehow privileged. The logical inference of that legal standard is that we may dispose of human life, in its genesis, for any reason. Folks, this is tyranny defined - the idea that the powerless may die at our whim.
"The fetus doesn't pass the definition of life. It doesn't breathe on its own, feed itself, (or) reproduce." You hear that, quadriplegics on respirators? You're not truly alive. And Mr. Brown is outraged that you and others are a drain on society. He continues: "...carte blanche pro-life is not only irresponsible, but it wastes resources on the weak..." We don't "waste resources" - we justifiably use our resources to assist the helpless. But I guess Dr. Mengele's dream is alive and well in some quarters.
I took delight in Mr. Brown's nightmare scenario depicting a terribly challenged mother having to carry a terribly challenged child to term at the expense of former president Reagan. Did Mr. Brown seriously expect us to believe that even 10 percent of abortions cover situations like this? This rhetoric is so insulting, it sinks to a level below drivel. Below dreck. It might even be sub-piffle - it's a hole with no bottom, really.
Are you "persecuted" for choosing abortion, Mr. Brown? Who cares? If you are in the right, the caterwauling of the faithful is nothing more than noise, infantile tantrums against one acting with a clear conscience. Or perhaps it is you who doth protest too much?
What is the difference between a fetus and Mr. Brown's comatose father? None - yet Mr. Brown arrives at the opposite conclusion I did. His verdict: both are weak, a waste of resources.
