MOULTON - To say that sisters Skyler and Julie Bartek are competitive would be an understatement.

Since 2003, one or the other of them have won either grand champion or reserve champion honors with their lambs at the Moulton Jr. Livestock Show.

"We've very competitive with each other," said older sister Skyler, 15.

"I think that makes us both better," chimed in Julie, 12.

Skyler has been showing lambs since the fourth grade and Julie started even earlier, at age 5.

Both girls have taken their animals to the stock shows in San Antonio, Houston and Austin and placed in the San Antonio show. Two years ago, Julie's lamb took reserve champion honors at the Houston show.

Skyler, a sophomore member of the Moulton FFA, and Julie, a sixth grader who shows with the Early Bird 4-H Club, have a younger brother, Brandon Bartek, 5, who is already showing lambs in pee-wee shows.

Weldon Rainey, Ag science teacher in the Moulton school district said the girls' work ethic is the key to their success.

"They are driven to succeed, and they work hard at it," he said. "And also, it's something they want to do and are not forced to do. That's important. They carry the same attitude into the classroom."

Matt Kennedy, owner of Kennedy Club Lambs of Stillwater, Okla., sells lambs to the Bartek family and works closely with the girls.

"They work hard," Kennedy said. "It's all in the feeding and exercising the animals. These girls are such good showmen, too. That helps."

Skyler won showmanship honors at this year's Moulton show, her fifth, and both have won multiple showmanship titles. In 2008, Skyler placed seventh in the state in showmanship in the Texas Junior Livestock Association competition.

The sisters are the daughters of Tony and Melanie Bartek.
