Christopher Paz, 27, always aspired for higher education, but when he graduated high school in 1999 he wasn't sure if he could afford to attend.
The Dimmitt native had so many questions about college and began to think that maybe college was not his next step.
In 2002, he decided to join the Marines. He has since completed his four-year tour and is now ready to attend college.
"This is my first semester of college and I'm just anxious to get started," Paz said.
He moved to Victoria in 2008 and decided The Victoria College would be his starting point for higher education.
"I've always wanted to go to college, but I was always unsure about when I would start," he said.
Before he could start he had to attend the new student orientation.
"All new students and transfer students with less than 12 hours are required to attend the NSO," Patsy Freeman, VC director of counseling services, said.
Students who participate in orientation are more successful, Jose Sanchez, VC counselor, said.
"Orientation is a time for students to ask questions and receive a tour of the campus before school starts," he said.
Orientation provides administrators, faculty and staff the opportunity to meet with students and make students aware of all the services and policies the college has and provides.
"Students are not always aware of all the services we provide, and orientation helps us to make them aware," Sanchez said.
When students think of orientation they think of a long boring process, but this is the best time for students to ask questions and receive answers before they begin their higher education career, he said.
"I didn't know we could only drop six classes our entire college career," Paz said. "I don't intend to drop classes, but it's good information to know."
He also received information on financial aid and clubs and organizations, he said.
"Even though it was a long process it was a learning experience," Paz said.
He plans to become a secondary teacher. He does not know what will be his subject of concentration.
"I'm anxious about school and I know as soon as I start there's no turning back," Paz said.
