People are not putting away their new roll-out trash containers in a timely fashion and that's generating complaints and comment to Victoria's city officials.

"They should really be treated no differently than the trash cans we used before," Council Member Paul Polasek said. "Most people were able to put those up and be good neighbors and try to keep their neighborhoods up."

The city law states that trash can be left out only from 8 p.m. the day before collection until 8 p.m. the day of collection.

Darryl Lesak, the city's assistant director of Environmental Services, said the problem is sporadic and not restricted to certain areas. He estimated his department is getting six to eight calls a week from people complaining about neighbors not putting away the containers.

"It's not about people putting them out early or leaving them out an extra few hours," he said. "The complaints are about people leaving them at the road three or four days or even all week."

The city is letting people know they are violating the city ordinance by sending them letters when complaints are received. Lesak's office has mailed about 65 to 70 letters so far.

"As far as I know, no one called back to say they don't want to bring it in," he said.

Customers who refuse to comply with the law could be reported to the city's code enforcement division, which would conduct it's own investigation. Violators could be fined up to $500.

But both Lesak and Polasek said that would be a last resort.

"I would rather avoid anybody getting fined on anything," Lesak said. "We'll work with you as much as we can to get it done."

How the hell do I know they're just bringing my trash can in? Shoot first, ask questions later. Anything less would be uncivilized.

well what else would they be bringing in with the trash can? yea i bet a lot of criminals are thinking i am going to throw this person off and make them think i am a good neighbor but really i am going to break into this person's home.

I hope you're not my neighbor, then. If I see someone skulking around the side of my house, I'm going to open fire. It's not your place to put up my trash can, neighbor or no.

wow what an idiot. sure that makes a lot of sense. gonna open fire on someone bringing your trash can to your house. do you know how stupid that sounds? people on both sides are being ridiculous. who cares if someone's trashcan is left out still on the road. and who cares if someone wants to be a nice neighbor and bring it in for them. you people need to lighten up.

  • I am just saying, I walk to get the mail, and if I see a trash can that has been sitting out, obviously they are gone. I roll it up to their house. About "opening fire", sorry, I live in a nice, quiet neighborhood, not a hunting zone.

  • OMG! You must have a very boring life, you have time to worry about your neighbor's trash can. You need to go the a "Trash Can" support group.
I love the comment about the "trash can sitter" :)

  • Big deal! People don't have anything better to do with their time so they are going to worry about their neighbors trash cans?? PLEASE! Yea, so what if you go out of town, or work late??? I know if I get home late....after 8pm, I being a small female am not going to drag in that hunk a chunk. So occasionally the trash can will be left out till morning....big deal!

  • Be a good neighbor and put it by there house. WHat happens if you go out of town and can't put your can up? Hire a trashcan sitter, lol.

  • Justwondering

There are people from the first areas implemented that have never really moved their cans from where they were dropped off.

    January 22, 2009 at 11:24 p.m.
  • The first areas that got cans, didn't have stickers.
So they had people out putting stickers on the cans.
My neighbor came and knocked on my door to tell me that they had "tagged" my can.
I went and looked at it, okay, simple instructions.
    NO PROBLEM!
My neighbor ripped the instruction sticker off their can and proceeded to call the solid waste department and CHEW OUT the poor person that answered the phone.
Claiming they PAY TAXES, etc, etc. and they were NOT going to stand for this kind of abuse.
Hung up on the poor person on the phone, and called CITY HALL to get this situation straightened out.
City hall evidently transferred them back to the solid waste department, who finally got through to the neighbor that they hadn't done anything wrong, it was just a listing of the rules for setting the garbage out. make it more convenient for the customer if its listed right there on the can. blah blah blah.
THEN WHY DIDN'T THEY PICK UP MY CAN?
Because the persons applying the stickers weren't the ones who pick up the cans.
    The neighbor was satisfied.
But now I am worried, my sticker has gotten faded and unreadable, so I am not sure if I can remember the rules. maybe the city needs to put new stickers on the cans?

    January 22, 2009 at 11:20 p.m.
  • I just checked...my can has two stickers on it. Telling me:
1.What day it will be picked up and what time to have it out by.
2.Where to sit it and not to put it closer than 5 feet from anything else
3.To close the lid and point the arrow on the lid towards the street.

    Pretty simple actually.

Instructions are in english and spanish. Are your cans missing such info?

  • People would if "ALL" the rules were there. DUH

    January 22, 2009 at 1 p.m.
  • Bighorn i only wish ppl could read the directions on the can.

    January 22, 2009 at 12:48 p.m.
  • I live in a small apartment complex of 6 apartments and just about all my neighbors leave theirs on the curb all week. It bothers me but not more than them taking them out there to be emptied. For a long time they didn't do that and it stunk and probably why we have a mouse/rat infestation. And for the record, there is no way to tell whose can(s) they are.

    January 22, 2009 at 9:09 a.m.
  • Lol...I really could care less....I can follow the rules and change doesn't upset me much. I only wish the city would have thought through the implementation more thoroughly (trying saying that 4 times fast) and Victorians could read, understand, and follow simple directions.
I figure by June they'll get it down.

    January 22, 2009 at 8:54 a.m.
  • I do not see that BS posted on the can. I need the rules to the rule book in this backwoods town.

    January 22, 2009 at 8:35 a.m.
  • Heck, these cans are so damned big, most of my nieghbors have to store it outside. And they are a wonderful addition to any landscape!

    January 22, 2009 at 7:22 a.m.
  • You've got to be kidding. Upset because people don't put up their trash cans??
