Workforce reductions the Dow Seadrift site announced in December have begun, company spokeswoman Trish Ritthaler said.
The company will not disclose, however, how many people have been affected by layoffs so far or how many are expected in total, she said.
"Notifications are being made, decisions are ongoing," Ritthaler said.
In early December, plant officials announced its NORDEL MG hydrocarbon rubber unit would close as part of a company-wide cost-cutting measures.
Later that same month, site manager David Pankratz estimated about 50 people would lose their jobs as a result of that close. That number was simply an estimate, he explained.
The plant employs about 700 people.

LOCAL INDUSTRY CUTS
Other area plants have felt the push of an ailing economy. Their cost-cutting measures include:
Invista has employed a variety of tactics to meet with the slowdown, such as alternative work schedules, cutting expenses and reducing both costs and overtime, company spokeswoman Amy Hodges said.
Alcoa announced in late October it was cutting alumina production by 25 percent at its Point Comfort plant and cutting smelting production worldwide.
Zachry Industrial Inc. eliminated 60 contractor positions from Invista's Victoria plant at Invista's request, said John Hornsby, Zachry's director of employee engagement.
Formosa Plastics Corp. has decreased production and cut costs when possible, Randy Smith, the company's general manager and vice president, said.
