The more success Memorial's Steven Funk enjoys, the better he seems to wrestle.

Funk had a pin and won by forfeit as the Vipers split a pair of dual matches Tuesday at the Stroman campus gym.

Memorial dropped a 33-30 decision to Beeville before defeating Corpus Christi Moody 42-24.

"He's been struggling with a couple of particular moves," Memorial coach Fred Mease said of Funk. "Kyle Lee has been working a lot with him in practice trying to defend that one move and trying to get him more aggressive. At the Saturday tournament (in Austin), he got a pin in the first period and you could almost see his confidence tonight start to swell. I know I've been plugging him with it saying, 'You know you're so close, you just got to overcome the little barriers.' I wouldn't say he's over the hump, but he's starting to get a little more confidence and that's half the game."

Funk worked hard to pin Christian Morin of Beeville in their 125-pound match with 19.70 seconds remaining in the first period.

"Everything has pretty much clarified after last year," said Funk, a sophomore, who wrestled for the first time as a freshman. "I've improved a lot since last year. I'm able to fight off my back better and I'm able to pin people."

Funk, who moved to Victoria from Saskatchewan, Canada, started to wrestle at the advice of his coaches at Howell Middle School.

"My middle school coaches just encouraged me a lot more toward this and to be more active," Funk said. "I was really slow in football and here I'm doing a lot better."

Jason Pate also had a pin for Memorial against Beeville, stopping Chris Hernandez with 25.75 seconds remaining in the third period.

"We have some injuries and we've got to overcome that," Mease said. "It's kind of like we're trying to get out of the Christmas doldrums. We're getting better. We're working on conditioning a lot. We've got to just keep going on. We're getting better technically because we've got a lot of young kids."
