Editor, the Advocate:

I respectfully ask Rawley Brown ("Abortion: Try a Different Viewpoint," Jan. 18) to study "Theology of the Body" by Pope John Paul II, and "Humanae Vitae" by Pope Paul VI before he writes his next article for the Advocate.

It is disappointing to me that the Advocate would print such a bizarre interpretation of the teaching of the Catholic Church on the sanctity of life.

  • Nothing like using religious texts to make and pass legislation for government.
P.S. Foe the religious zealots out there the above comment is something known as sarcasm.

  • Yes, set up and wrap abortion in all kinds of red tape. The governemnt is good at that. If is was the product of a crime that violated the woman, or there are just some extreme medical consequences for the woman and child. It should be very early, and with a refined process.

  • Maverick, while I totally agree with you about the pro-lifers mainly being all talk and no walk, I don't want us to go back to wire hanger abortions in back alleys. What the pro-lifers don't get is that there are always going to be abortions with or without Roe v Wade and all of the sign holding and preaching and everything else they do is not going to stop it. I, too, think they should step up to the plate, take these mothers in and support them or adopt their unwanted children; but you are right. They only talk. I prefer to think that wire hanger abortions could potentially kill 2 people - mother and child. You will never be able to legislate morality (for all that the pro-lifers would like to)so there are always going to be abortions and abortionists and until the pro-lifers step up to the plate and put their money where their mouths are, I opt for safe, sanitary procedures instead of the back alley kind. Maybe some of the pro-lifers are too young to remember the way things were prior to Roe v Wade and maybe it would help if they were shown a few pictures of "home made" abortions.

  • Nothing in my post was meant as tongue and cheek. I am tired of seeing prolifers on the news with signs, and sitting outside of clinics making a silent seen. With the technology we have today it is possible to make a list of these people, and put them over the coals. It's very easy to hold up a sign, but what happens when you tell that person with a sign that they can take the full responsiblity of the being your saving? Face those people with reality of supporting another life, which would mean changing their life completely, having to do without extras in their life that they have become acustom to living with, making these huge sacrifices. I bet 3 out 4 will drop that sign and say nevermind, or SAY can't someone else adopt that child, or why should I be the one to have to do it. There MAY BE a hand full of prolifers that may be WILLING and financially ABLE to rise to this sort of challenge, but will they? They won't because it is easier to pass the buck. That's why I say regulate the heck out of abortion, and examine every case very carefully.

  • Maverick...You may have meant some of what you posted as tongue in cheek, but there are some on here who'll blast you for it. My best advice is to hunker down.

  • I believe in the woman's right to choose what happens to her and what is in her body. Pro-life people need to rally together and make themselves truly available for these unwanted beings. How about make list of pro-lifers all over the country with their addresses, so we can send them the child whose life you saved. That won't happen. A pro-lifers dedication to the cause stops at holding up signs at clinics, postings on the internet, and gathering in front of public officials to say how wrong it is abort. If the conception was not of a consensual nature, there is already a known serious defect, or there is a serious health threat to mother and child, the mother should have the right to decide what she needs to do for herself. Get rid of any government funding, and screen the women thoroughly. I agree that abortion out of convience or what would become an inconvience should be stopped. Parents taking their unwedd teen in for an abortion to protect their image is wrong. But to take the right away from a woman completely would be wrong. If she was raped, should she be forced to go through 9 months of a constant reminder about what was done to her? Now, is that fair? Torcher the woman psychologically to save the life of a child that will probably be tossed from foster home to foster home before being adopted or never adopted. Prolifers need to think about the all the other agencies that become more involved in the lives of these unwanted beings. Volunteer at a CPS office so you can how hard those people have it now. Prolifers won't do that.
