The Palacios Sharks soccer team looks to contend in new District 46-4A this season. Palacios finished last season in sixth place in District 24-4A with a 6-10 record and 11-15 overall. Last year Seven Lakes finished first and Lamar Consolidated finished second and Bay City third in district. In the new district gone are the Rosenberg schools: Seven Lakes, Lamar Consolidated, Foster and Terry. The new district teams with Palacios are Angleton, Brazosport, Columbia, El Campo and Bay City. “District looks pretty good for us this year, and we expect to make a strong run at the playoffs this season,” said Palacios Sharks head coach Jose Ortiz. “Last year’s team left big shoes to fill for the teams to come, and I think this year’s team will only set the bar higher for teams to follow. We will more or less get a feel of what to expect from district after our Shark Shootout tournament being held on Friday, Jan. 30 and Saturday, Jan. 31, since most of the visiting teams are district opponents.” The strength of the team is its strong and fast attack, and its weakness is young defenders, Ortiz said. Key players are Christian Hernandez because of his great ball skills and Jesus Hernandez with his great passing skills, dribbling and finishing off the play. Ryan Martinez is another player who has strong throwing power. The returning starters are Sergio Sefuentes, Christian Hernandez, Luis Serrato, Henry Cano, Gabriel Lopez, Dustin Diaz, Ryan Martinez, Julio Ramon and Stephen Alderete. Other team members are Kevin Borja, Jesus Hernandez, Hector Esquivel, Frankie Longoria, Juan Matta, Jairo Perez, Eddie Alanis and Kegan Brewer. J. Overton is the assistant coach and the managers are Monica Ortiz and Alex Hurtado.
