The Van Vleck Lady Leopards had little difficulty in handling the Danbury Lady Panthers as Van Vleck zoomed past Danbury 55-38 on Friday, Jan. 16, at Van Vleck. Van Vleck improved to 2-1 in District 19-2A with the win. Danbury opened the game with a basket by Mandy Stabeck, which was the only time Danbury led in the contest. Jona Griffith tied the game and gave Van Vleck the lead on two baskets for a 4-2 lead. Griffith continued the rally with two more lay-ups for a 10-4 Lady Leopard lead with four minutes left in the first quarter. Stabeck answered for Danbury with a three-point play as she hit a basket and foul shot to narrow the gap to 10-7 with 2:36 left in the quarter. Van Vleck led at the end of the first quarter, 14-9. Brashae Bree opened the second quarter with a three-point play for Van Vleck as she made a lay up and a foul shot for a 17-9 lead. Danbury answered back with a five-point run to narrow the gap to 17-12. Desiree Griggs ended the four-minute scoring drought for Van Vleck as she hit a basket for a 19-12 advantage. Griffin helped the Lady Leopards pull away as she hit two free-throws and two baskets on a fast breaks to give Van Vleck a 27-18 advantage with 1:58 left in the second quarter. Van Vleck led at the half, 30-20. Van Vleck opened the second half with a backcourt press and caused Danbury to turn the ball over as the Lady Leopards stretched their lead to 36-24 with baskets by Griffin, Alisha Brown, and Bree. Brown and Andrea Floyd kept the rally alive with steals and lay ups for a 40-24 Lady Leopard lead with 3:30 left in the third quarter. Van Vleck led after three quarters 46-28. The fourth quarter the Leopards slowed the game down and played ball control. Danbury scored the first basket of the quarter with 6:47 to go in the game as the Leopards led 46-30. The Lady Leopards scored their first basket of the quarter with 5:25 left in the fourth quarter with a lay up by Bree, but Danbury answered back with a three pointer by Jen Mendez with four minutes left in the contest. Griffin ended the scoring for Van Vleck with a minute to go with a foul shot for a 55-38 victory. The Van Vleck Lady Leopards will host Tidehaven at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 23.
