Leopards score 97 points in rout over Danbury

The Van Vleck Leopards opened District 29-2A with a 97-48 rout over the Danbury Panthers on Friday, Jan. 16. Van Vleck had seven players score in double figures in the win at Van Vleck. “I didn’t expect to beat Danbury by this large of a margin, and this game was very physical,” said Van Vleck Leopards head coach Randolph Brown. “Trent Freeman and Terrance Alliniece both played fantastic game. Alliniece is pure speed on the court and all I have to do is point him in the right direction. I also have to comment on our fan support that we have it is also awesome.” Danbury opened the contest with Jake DeBerry shooting a technical as the Panthers took a 1-0 lead. Torrian Miller started the scoring for Van Vleck with a basket with seven remaining in the first quarter. Matt Dees hits two foul shots to give Danbury a 3-2 lead. The Panthers scored their first basket with four minutes remaining in the quarter as the Leopards led 8-7. Before the basket all Danbury’s points had come from the foul line. Van Vleck started to pull away from its opponents with two three pointers by Alliniece as the Leopards led 17-11 with 2:35 left in the first quarter. Odis Hawkins gave the Leopards a 10-point lead with 55 seconds left on a layup on a fast break. He also was fouled on the play and made a free throw for a 23-13 lead. Van Vleck led 25-15 at the end of the first quarter. Dakota Sebesta hit a three pointer for Danbury to start the second quarter, but Van Vleck answered back with fire power from Trent Freeman and Miller to take a 34-22 lead. Freeman scored two buckets and Miller hit a basket and a three pointer with 5:20 left in the second quarter. Van Vleck closed out the four minutes of the quarter with a 16-point rally and led at the half with a 50-25 advantage. The Leopards opened the third quarter with a seven-point run and led with five minutes left 57-25. Van Vleck had baskets from Hakeem Blackmon, Devin Ward and Jordan Donaldson in the run. Blackmon brought the Van Vleck crowd to its feet with a slam-dunk with 40 seconds left in the third quarter as Van Vleck led 71-41. Van Vleck led after the third quarter 73-39. Van Vleck opened the fourth quarter with two 3-pointers by Shane Yarborough and Hawkins for a 79-39 lead. Yarborough hit another three pointer with four minutes remaining to give the Leopards an 86-47 lead. Alliniece swished another three pointer with one-minute left to give Van Vleck a 93-48 lead and Alliniece had his third three pointer of the game and led the team in scoring with 15 points. The Leopards made nine 3-pointers and made 8-of-15 free throws. Other leading scorers for the Leopards were Freeman and Donaldson with 14 points followed by Ward with 13 points. Blackmon scored 12 points and Hawkins and Yarborough scored 10 points. Miller scored nine points as all Van Vleck players scored in the contest.
