For 30 years, Riders in the Sky has been entertaining audiences with its mix of comedy and western music. The secret to their longevity?

"Separate hotel rooms," guitarist Ranger Doug joked. "Seriously, I think the key is that when we started, western music was already out of style and it hasn't gotten more out of style since then. Plus, we have fun with what we do and people like to laugh."

Formed in 1977 in Nashville, the four-member group has kept the tradition of western music alive by performing all over the country.

On Jan. 31, they are coming to Victoria to perform with the Victoria Symphony.

"It's so much fun playing with a symphony," Ranger Doug said. "The music is just made for it, and it sounds like you are in the middle of a Western."

But the night won't be all about music. Riders in the Sky pride themselves on their humor as well.

"People need something to laugh at, especially during these tough times. It's a nice way to escape watching your 401(k) plummet further," he said. "In fact, it's not a coincidence that the tradition of the singing cowboy began during the Depression."

Inspired by the likes of Roy Rogers and Sons of the Pioneers, the Grammy award-winning group strives to keep the cowboy way of life alive and well, he added.
