In 1995, the shipwreck of La Belle was discovered under 12 feet of water in Matagorda Bay.
La Belle was the prized ship of famous French explorer Robert Cavelier La Salle and the last hope of escape for the desperate settlers at the ill-fated Fort St. Louis.
Author and illustrator Mark Mitchell retells the story of this ship and its commander in his book "Raising La Belle: The Story of the La Salle Shipwreck."
The book is part of the Museum of the Coastal Bend Book Club and on Feb. 5, the museum, in conjunction with the Victoria Public Library, will give a special presentation.
Beginning at 4 p.m., a presentation will be at the library, followed by a reception at the museum and a tour of the La Salle Odyssey exhibit and at 6:30 p.m. another presentation at the museum, according to a museum news release.
The event is open to the public. For more information, call 361-582-2511.
