For more than 15 years, Karen Zimmerly and her husband, John Mattson, have traveled across the state of Texas photographing the small, nearly abandoned towns they encountered.

The photographs were eventually compiled into an exhibit titled "Sojourn: Musings on Time and Place in Texas."

Victorians will get a chance to check out the exhibit first hand at a public opening Thursday at the McNamara House. The ongoing photographic project that explores these declining, rural communities in Texas is on display in the O'Connor Gallery of the McNamara through March 1.

"The past is intrinsically linked with these places and hence these photographs," the artists said in a news release. "Perhaps the passage of time on buildings results in intriguing subject matter for photographs, but undoubtedly part of the fascination is knowing that at one time these buildings held within their walls the dreams and hopes of people who have come and gone. Their histories and stories are never far from the surface."

Zimmerly and Mattson live in San Angelo. For more information about the exhibit, go to www.victoriaregionalmuseum.com.
