HALLETTSVILLE - For the 59th time, domino players from across Texas will gather for the annual state championship domino tournament Sunday at the Knights of Columbus hall.
"We are expecting about 270 players," said Kenneth Henneke, a member of the Knights of Columbus who helps publicize the event. "About 25 years ago we had our peak participation when we had almost 400 players."
Henneke said the event began in 1951 and "back then there was no television and no computers. A lot of people played dominos. It was big."
These days, dominos remains popular and teams of two will compete for cash prizes for the top five teams as well as the title of Texas state champion. The tournament is double elimination.
Registration runs from 7 to 9 a.m. at the hall, 321 U.S. Highway 77 S., and is $15 for individuals or $30 per team.
A Domino Hall of Fame induction ceremony is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Inductees this year include Dickie Henneke of Hallettsville and Paul Kendrick of Nacogdoches.
Tournament play begins at 9 a.m. and a barbecue dinner will be served at noon or after two rounds of play. The public is invited to eat for $7 for plates-to-go. Short orders and refreshments will also be sold throughout the tournament.
