While the upcoming Victoria Jaycee Livestock Show has some kids keeping an eye on their goats or hammering away at birdhouses, a select few participants are practicing their smiles, going over interview questions and preparing for a big night.

The Queen Victoria Pageant is Saturday in the Victoria College auditorium.

During the evening, the 19 contestants will be judged on criteria such as appearance, originality of response, sincerity and personality, said Leesa Brown, assistant coordinator for this year's livestock show.

But participants' work isn't over when the crowning ends.

Those who win reign over the stock show and present awards, Brown said. They also promote the livestock show throughout the year, take part in community service activities and participate in area parades.

"They really stay busy," Brown said.
