When Allye Lykes last participated in a beauty pageant, walking in high heels wasn't her strong point.

"I wobbled," she said.

The 17-year-old from Victoria wore small heels Saturday evening during the 2009 Queen Victoria Pageant in the auditorium of The Victoria College. She was one of 20 contestants between the ages of 3 and 18 to compete in the pageant. At the end of the competition, she was crowned 2009 Queen.

Lykes took part in the pageant in 2005 and decided to do so again this year because she thought it would be a good opportunity to do more community service.

"I like working with my community," she said. "Knowing the fact that I'm helping others that need someone."

The pageant's court, which includes the children awarded the top three contestants in their age group and the recipients of the Miss Congeniality, Miss Photogenic and Top Ad Sales awards, go on to participate in events and award ceremonies at the 63rd annual Victoria Jaycee Livestock Show, Feb. 26 to March 2, represent the livestock show at as many as 25 different parades throughout the year and do community service work, such as visiting nursing homes.

A senior at Memorial High School, Lykes is already involved in other community service activities. She is vice president of the student council and the high school's branch of HOSA, or Health Occupations Students of America.

She applied early to Baylor University in Waco and is waiting to hear whether the university admitted her. At Baylor, she wants to study medicine and go on to become a dermatologist like her grandfather.

"I relate a lot to my grandpa," she said.

Lykes said she enjoys pageants because they are fun. She only gets nervous when others get nervous, she added.

For the competition, she and the other contestants participated in a pre-show interview with the three pageant judges and then donned western wear and formal attire on stage.

Lykes chose an orange-colored outfit for the formal attire portion of the show.

"They said, 'Surprise the judges," she said. "'Make them remember you.'"
