Memorial coach Fred Neuman was a little more tense than he had to be looking at the Memorial Vipers Classic leaderboard Friday after his first three players posted scores.

Neuman saw only one score in the 70s and knew either his number four or five player was going to have to come through if the Vipers were to find themselves in the thick of things after the first round.

Senior Cameron Gomez wasn't about to let his coach down as he finished with a career-round 7-over 79 at Victoria Country Club.

"That's the best ever, I've never shot that well before," Gomez said after his round that left the Vipers nine shots off the lead.

San Antonio East Central grabbed the opening-round lead with a 328, while San Antonio Churchill follows three shots back at 331. Memorial slips in at 337, while Corpus Christi Incarnate Word and San Antonio MacArthur were in at 343.

"Overall I'm pleased, especially Cameron," Neuman said. "When Cameron made the turn I knew he was playing pretty well and he was able to hold it together on the back. He put us in a competitive position for tomorrow."

Gomez made the turn at 7-over 43, but put it together on his back nine when he came in with an even-par 36.

"I wasn't having a really good round yet shooting a 43 but I knew I wasn't approaching the holes the way I should have been approaching them," Gomez said.

"I told myself going into the back you need to turn it around and whatever you're you do focus on what you have to do. So, I just went out and played some golf and had some fun and it worked."

Gomez's 79 mixed with Trevor Vega's 79 put the Vipers back into the thick of things. Sean Hawes posted an 88, with Greg Brazzeal and Robbie Boissonneault tossing in 91s.

Vega and Gomez were tied for fourth individually with Corpus Christi Miller's Eric Cavazos.

Miller's Vance Cavazos holds the individual lead with a 2-over 74, while East Central's Justin Foster was three back at 77 with his teammate Chris Godwin ina t 78.

"It was a tough course out there today," Vega said. "The wind was extremely difficult and the greens were hard and fast."

Vega, a freshman, struggled early going out in 41 before turning things around to come in with a 38.

"I started out bad but I just made the best of what I had on the back," Vega said.

St. Joseph was in eight place with a 357 and were paced by Jordan Salazar's 84. Kerry Culberson added an 86, Michael Salazar an 89, Clark Mott a 98 and Aaron Tschoepe a 103.

Memorial's B-team was a shot back at 358 and were led by a pair of 87s from Garrett Wakefield and Klayton Koch. David Maxey added a 90, while Robert Griego and Brandon Smalley had 94s.

Saturday's final round gets under way at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at Colony Creek Country Club.
