The TAPPS 9-2A race just got interesting.

Faith Academy held Shiner St. Paul to 25 fewer points than in their first meeting and stayed in the TAPPS 9-2A district title race with a 55-49 win over Shiner St. Paul on Friday.

The Lady Cougars and Lady Cardinals share 4-1 TAPPS 9-2A records after the game and split the season matchup. St. Paul won the first game 74-66 in Shiner.

"We really worked on defense this week in practice and it paid off," Faith Academy's Kayla Escalante said. "We came up with some big stops."

Escalante scored a game-high 15 points in the win, while Shayla Mathis and Emily Graff each went for 12 for the Lady Cougars.

"I too, my time and tried not to rush anything," Escalante said. "I was open a lot of the time so it made it easier to get some points."

Shelby Bohuslav and Marissa Ynclan led the Lady Cardinals with 11 each, while Emily Wagner scored 10.

"They scored 74 points on us last time so we knew we were going have to do a better job of stopping them here," Faith Academy head coach Daryl Burns said. "We played really well in man defense. We did that the entire game and it worked. They were a little cold in their shooting too, so that helped."

Graff scored 10 of her 12 points in the second half and was the lone bright spot on offense after halftime for the Lady Cougars.

Faith Academy was held to six points in the fourth quarter, but went on a 6-0 run to end the game.

Stormy Clark was limited to eight points after getting in early foul trouble for the Lady Cougars, but finished with eight rebounds to lead the team. Graff led Faith Academy with five assists.

"We did a lot better job of rebounding in this game," Graff said. "I've been focusing on the basket and finishing. I was able to do that and get some pretty easy baskets."
