Allison Miles talked with Minnie Gutierres cq and Elvira Basquez.

1: Why did you choose the industry?

Because I am a people person. I enjoy interacting with people and sells. I've been in sales on and off for most of my adult life.

2: Describe your first day in business.

Excitement, anticipation, nervous.

3: Describe a typical workday.

We get to the shop excited to have a shop to go to, turn on all our lights and pray. We pray before the start of every day.

4: Why open up shop in the Crossroads region?

We live here. This is home and our families live here. We were both born in Goliad.

5: Is it difficult to find employees in our workforce? How do you find workers?

At this time we are not hiring. My sister and I operate the shop on our own.

6: What advice would you give others starting a new business?

The most important thing is family cooperation. Because whether your business is small or large, it will require your attention 24/7.

7: What is the biggest challenge your industry faces?

I guess the fact that most business customers are on a tight budget. You must be creative and put people at ease about spending money.

8: What is something most people don't realize about running a small business?

It's like giving birth to a child. You go through the pregnancy, carry the baby, there's the labor and the birth and you have to give the business the proper nutrition and attention. Eventually it will walk on its own.

9: In your time running your business, what is your best story?

There are so many I can't just pick one. I have met some really great people.

10: Where do you see yourself and your business in five years?

Grown to a place where we will need to expand our shop area and financially able to develop a program where we can help the community with charitable contributions.
