Greeted by a strong north wind and chilly temperatures Saturday morning, Memorial freshman Trevor Vega went about his business as usual on the golf course.
Vega turned in his second consecutive round of 79 to finish as third medalist and help lead the Vipers to a third-place finish in his first Memorial Vipers Spring Classic as a member of the varsity squad.
"Being consistent with the weather changing dramatically like it did, a 79 at any course today is a pretty good score," Vega said following his round.
Vega posted a 79 in Friday's opening round at Victoria Country Club and came back with an identical number Saturday at Colony Creek Country Club to finish at 158. He was four shots back of individual champion, Vance Cavazos of Corpus Christi Miller, who posted a 74-80-154.
Cavazos' 154 edged out his brother Eric (79-76-150), the defending individual champion, by one shot.
Vega's 79 paced the Vipers on Saturday as Memorial posted a final round 329 to finish with a two-day 666.
"I started off really slow," said Vega. " I had a string of like three bogeys and couldn't find a birdie until my last hole. I knew I have to finish one under on my last five holes and I was able to par my first four and was able to birdie No. 18 to shoot 79."
San Antonio Churchill came from three shots down to claim its tournament leading four Classic title by two shots of San Antonio East Central. Churchill posted a final round 326 to finish at 657, while East Central, the first-round leader, tallied a 331 for a 659.
But Vega's 79 was the lone sub-80 round on the day for the Vipers who were unable to make a charge at the leaders after starting the day nine shots back.
Following Vega, Cameron Gomez carded a 79-85-164, while Sean Hawes added an 88-83-171, Robbie Boissonneault a 91-82-173, and Greg Brazzeal a 91-95-186.
"My hats off especially to Trevor, he definitely led us to the third-place finish and then you look at what Cameron was able to do the first day and to come back the second day with the conditions the way they were and be able to post an 85, I'm very proud of him as well. In fact I was proud of all our players, they posted a better score to day in tougher conditions than they did the day before," vipers coach Fred Neuman said.
Neuman said the Vipers also can use the tournament as a learning experience as the prepare for district in April.
"It makes us aware that not just C.C. King, but East Central is going to be a very formidable foe in district and we're going to have to step up our game if going to get our of district," Neuman said.
Behind Memorial in fourth place was Corpus Christi Incarnate Word with a 670, while San Antonio MacArthur finished fifth at 691.
St. Joseph finished with a 725 and were led by a pair of 174s from Michael Vasquez and Jordan Salazar.
