Correction A shooting in Yoakum on Jan. 17 was a few feet from the property of Fat Alberts BBQ & Icehouse. The precise location was incorrect in a story.
YOAKUM - Reactions are mixed about two violent incidents during the weekend in this town of about 6,000 residents that left two people injured and a Yoakum man charged with attempted murder.
"It bothers me. It's getting worse and changing our lives," said Yvonne Moore, who lives in the 600 block of West May Street, 3/10 of a mile from Fat Albert's BBQ & Icehouse where a shooting occurred Saturday night.
"We never used to lock our doors, but now we have to keep everything locked up," Moore said, in part blaming the down economy and the influx of illegal immigrants for the problem.
"I had someone try to break in my car about three months ago, but I heard them and turned on the porch light and they took off," Moore said.
Another resident, Lorea Schaffner who lives closer to the restaurant in the 400 block of West May Street, said she wasn't concerned about the weekend's incidents.
"They don't concern me any more than any other we have around here. This is still a safe place to live," Schaffner said.
The first incident began Saturday night as a "physical confrontation" inside Fat Albert's BBQ & Icehouse in the 600 block of Irvine Street. The Yoakum Police Department received a 911 call at 11:40 p.m.
".the owners told them to leave," according to a news release. "The victim, a 29-year-old Yoakum man, went to his vehicle and the suspect approached the victim, pulled out a small caliber pistol, shooting the victim four times. The victim fled on foot and the suspect chased after him, shooting."
The victim was air lifted by Citizens Air Medical to Brackenridge Hospital in Austin.
DeWitt County Justice of the Peace Peggy Mayer issued a warrant for the arrest of Herman Rosales Jr., charging him with attempted murder. On Sunday, Rosales turned himself in to the DeWitt County Sheriff's Office. He remains in jail pending bail on a $100,000 bond.
The second incident took place shortly after 10 p.m. on Sunday night when police received a 911 call about a stabbing in the 200 block of Hope Street.
A 44-year-old man from Yoakum had been cut on the face and the back. Citizens Air Medical transported him to Citizens Medical Center in Victoria, according to a news release.
While on the way to the location, Yoakum police officers saw a car leaving the scene matching the description of the suspect's vehicle, according to the news release. A pursuit of the 1998 Ford Expedition ensued with speeds reaching 110 mph on U.S. Highway 111 W. The vehicle turned onto Gerhold Road and those inside bailed out.
One of the suspects was arrested hiding in a barn after Texas Department of Public safety helicopter from Corpus Christi located him. An unknown number of other occupants in the vehicle were not located.
Jose Jimenez, 29, of Victoria, was arrested and charged with felony evading arrest, according to the news release. He remains in custody on a $5,000 bond.
"We are still investigating and additional charges could be filed," said YPD investigator Lee Campbell.
Yoakum reported a total of seven assaults in 2007, the last year in which statistics are available, according to DPS crime statistics.
Mayor Annie Rodriguez thinks her town is fine.
"It's just ironic that these incidents happened so closely together in time. I don't think it's indicative of any increase in violent crimes here," she said.

A little help from friends

April 28, 2009 at 11:46 p.m.Please: lay off the ethnic bashing. I said it, but I'm sure it won't do any good. Also, I'm willing to bet YOUR ancestors are from Europe too! Also, my "mammy and pappy"
are from here, but my ancestors are from Europe. So? I'm not going home because I AM home.
And, please, don't post anything on my personal blog.
Consider me saying my opinion and now walking away from a "verbal confrontation."
Take care.
scorpio
Did it ever occur to you that working with law officials doesnt necessarily me I am a cop myself...lol I am merely saying I know for a fact there was no special treatment given in this case. The authorities were looking for Herman. Do you think he had breakfast with the YPD before he turned himself in on Monday or what? come on, get real.
January 22, 2009 at 3:07 p.m.They do their jobs, now whether you like them or not is your business. Best wishes to you in trying to find some positive thoughts about others instead of always trying to make others look so bad
hvilletx....if you work with the officers in yoakum that means you must work on the force there in yoakum and you know very well the good ole boy system is in place there. So do not call me a liar because I am a law abiding citizen and I do know what I have witnessed first hand with those good ole boys. I probably went to school with most of those cops in yoakum. I know that they are softer on close friends and family then they are outsiders and people that they do not like.
January 21, 2009 at 7:03 p.m."It's just ironic that these incidents happened so closely together in time. I don't think it's indicative of any increase in violent crimes here," Mayor Annie Rodriguez said.
Actually, it isn't "ironic" -- there's nothing ironic about the situation. It was "coincidental."
January 21, 2009 at 9:57 a.m.Ok first and foremost half of you dont know the real story of what has been going on or what has happened beside what you have read in the article. Stop judging others and worry about your own damn problems. I think Herman did what he had to do, like it was said who knows if Albert had a gun in his car? Now days you have to protect yourself and thats exactly what he did. Sometimes people dont know how to leave others alone, and then bad things happen you see? And as far as Herman turning himself in it was on Monday morning... not Sunday. And the Yoakum PD was looking for him including his kinfolk for whoever it was who mentioned that....and how do I know all this ?, well here we go back to that issue, mind ya own damn business.I wonder who bonded Herman out of jail on a $100,000 bond after shooting "THE VICTIM" four times? Must have been someone who trusts him. Best wishes Herman for a fair and honest outcome, we'll stand beside you 100%. Don't let these clueless, nosey, judgemental people bring you down, you know your business and you handled it. Holla
January 20, 2009 at 11:22 p.m.And scorpio yes there are a few Rosales in law enforcement and I, working with them both ,know they treat everyone the same whether it be me, you, or their family, so thats just another lie told today
Just beer bottles broken over somebody's head? Ok, somehow that was supposed to make sense....
January 20, 2009 at 9:03 p.m.I have grew up with the Rosales all my life but I know for a fact they do have their issue, but they are good people, In my opinon there shouldn't be any guns from the beginning, maybe we wouldn't have any killings, and if you do mess with them then who holds the resonsiblitity for them
January 20, 2009 at 8:08 p.m.I personally know Herman as well. I hadn't seen or talked with him in a long while. Although, he was a good guy. I wonder what the whole story is.
January 20, 2009 at 7:48 p.m.FAKESTORY.....IF YOUR FROM YOAKUM YOU WOULD KNOW THAT THE HISPANIC POPULATION IS THE MAJORITY OF THAT TOWN. PLEASE DON'T INSULT THE PEOPLE OF YOAKUM AND MAKE IT SOUND LIKE THE HISPANIC POPULATION IS THE MINORITY. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!!!!!!!!!
January 20, 2009 at 7:44 p.m.EVERYONE DOWNING A HARDWORKING DAD WITH NO RECORD, ALL BECAUSE OF A WEAPON USED IN SELF DEFENSE. A SO CALLED TROUBLEMAKER WITH A RECORD AND REPUTATION BEING NAMED A VICTIM. PLEASE GET REAL. ANY MAN BEING ATTACKED BY TWO MEN WITH BEER BOTTLES BROKE OVER HIS HEAD WOULD DO HIS BEST TO DEFEND HIMSELF. BESIDES THE SO CALLED VICTIM BEING AT HIS CAR, WHOS TO SAY HE WASNT HEADED FOR A WEAPON. AND SMALL TOWN IT IS, FIGHTS BREAKOUT IN NEIGHBORHOODS AND BARS ALL THE TIME, BUT WHY IS IT ALWAYS GANG OR DRUG RELATED WHEN ITS JUST JUDGED BY THE LAST NAME OR COLOR. ANY MINORITY IN YOAKUM WOULD AGREE WITH ME. JUST LIKE THIS GOOD GUY BEING JUDGED JUST BY HIS LAST NAME AND COLOR. BUT LIKE OBAMA SAYS ITS TIME FOR A CHANGE. BUT IN REALITY GOD MAKES THINGS HAPPEN FOR A REASON, AND GIVES PEOPLE SECOND CHANCES, AND HE SEES EVERYTHING. ONLY HE WILL BE THE ONE TO SETTLE IT. I WILL PRAY EVERYDAY FOR THIS KIND HEARTED MAN THAT HE GETS OUT OF THIS MESS.ALL BECAUSE EVERYONE MAKES MISTAKES AND CAN BE AT THE WRONG PLACE AT THE WRONG TIME....
January 20, 2009 at 7:40 p.m.Really don't think Herman should have turned himself in the next day, being that our town is so small why wasn't he just pick up that night afterwards.. I guess our police department didn't want to wake up their kin up in the mid morn...I really feel the Mayor needs to wake up and look around. Our town has so much drugs and gang wars going on and nothing is ever done the South side of town..any long time resident knows what really happens around here..safe I think not trust our police department yea right..
January 20, 2009 at 6:25 p.m.I just want to say I personally know Herman Rosales! He is not trash.. I mean here everyone one is judging on hearsay and because of his last name, is leading people to believe that he is a bad person, which he is NOT! Lets see? What about the so-called victim?? How does anyone REALLY know what went on or who started the problem. Herman isn't known to be a trouble maker, like some other people. I think what I have heard about the situation from hearsay is that Herman should be the victim. As far as him shooting, like the paper says, what was done to Herman for him to react with a weapon? Truth ALWAYS comes out in the end... God sees everything!!!
January 20, 2009 at 4:43 p.m.Thanks Cleric. A very good post.
January 20, 2009 at 2:45 p.m.That is very incorrect MayISaySO; he is NOT a good person. Or perhaps my definition of "good person" is different than yours, but to me a "good person" would not do the following:
- Be involved in a physical confrontation in a pubic setting
- After said confrontation, hunt down the person you had a disagreement with
- Pull a gun out and shoot FOUR times
- When the man he was shooting at runs, he chases after him and KEEPS SHOOTING.
If Herman was angry and wanted to fight or simply beat up this guy, he could have attempted that by confronting him at the victim's car. He obviously did not want that. He wanted to kill the victim.
That of course is my opinion but no one pulls a gun out, shoots at someone FOUR times and continues to chase and shoot with the intent to injure or scare someone.
None of what he did was because of his name. He was certainly not in the "wrong place at the wrong time". The victim went to his car, why couldn't Herman? Oh that's right, he is trash. Wah- He's brown. WHO CARES!? Quit trying to play the race card as it does not apply here.
I am of the same color and have a last name to reflect that, but the difference is I have never thought to use a gun on someone I have gotten angry with. Sure, I don't even own one, but that's besides the point. It's not the gun that's the problem, it is the person holding it. When it is a "good person" like Herman, this is the kind of stuff that happens.
It's people like him that are a disgrace to our race.
January 20, 2009 at 11:28 a.m.Innocent until proven guilty, but 'good people' don't put four bullets into others.
January 20, 2009 at 11:20 a.m.I personally know Herman Rosales JR. He is a very good person, not a thug. Like some like to believe, possibly just cause of his COLOR or last name. He was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Which is too bad for him, however he is still a good person.
January 20, 2009 at 10:21 a.m.Man what a shame. Fat Alberts is a great place. To bad a couple of sweats wana be bangers had to pick there to do this. This place is not a rough place really cool place to eat and bring the family. Wish you could refuse service to these butt heads. Don't want to profile though and trample on their civil rights!!! Stay in your own hoods and do your thing.
