Chips and salsa. Salsa and chips. Were there ever two things that went together better? The Texas government doesn't think so. In fact, they made chips and salsa the official state snack.
Now that the Super Bowl is right around the corner, chips and salsa will be taking center stage on many tables Sunday. Unfortunately, not all salsas were created equal.
But never fear. In order to make sure you have the best party possible, we recruited 16 rather eager taste-testers from various departments at the newspaper to find out which salsa is the best. After grueling hours of research (and six bags of tortilla chips), we present to you our findings.
No. 1: Pace Picante
H-E-B
$2.59 for 24 oz. jar
11 cents per ounce
"Really thick and a good mix of flavors, but not hot at all. Good starter for the gringos."
No. 2: H-E-B Salsa Picante
H-E-B
$1.96 for 16 oz. jar
12 cents per ounce
"I liked this just as much as the Pace Picante."
No. 3: Tostitos Chunky Salsa
Dick's
$2.89 for 15.5 oz. jar
19 cents per ounce
"Tastes good, not watery, definitely one of the best."
No. 4: Senora Verde Salsa
Sav-A-Lot
$1.49 for 16 oz. jar
9 cents per ounce
"Really good balance of chunks and sauce. Hot but not flaming."
No. 5: Sam's Choice Thick and Chunky Salsa
Wal-Mart
$1.98 for 26 oz. jar
8 cents per ounce
"Surprisingly good."
No. 6: Arriba Fire Roasted Mexican Red Salsa
Dick's
$3.79 for 16 oz. jar
24 cents per ounce
"Hotter than the others, nice taste."
No. 7: Taco Bell Thick & Chunky Salsa
Wal-Mart
$1.52 for 16 oz. jar
9 cents per ounce
"Funky flavor- made me want to run from the border."
No. 8: Archer Farms Salsa
Target
$2 for 16 oz. jar
12 cents per ounce
"Too sweet, like glorified marinara sauce."
No. 9: La Sabroza Mexicana
La Michoacana
$1.99 for 16 oz. jar
12 cents per ounce
"Call me Americanized, but it took my breath away...and not in the good way."
Of course, you need something to scoop up all that salsa. Our top picks for best chips?
No. 1: Senora Verde Restaurant Style Tortilla Chips
Sav-A-Lot
$1.09
"The surprise winner of the bunch. Stood out as the superior chip by far."
No. 2: Fritos Scoops
H-E-B
$3.49
"Forget those wimpy chips that always break off in the salsa bowl. Great taste, sturdy build and the smartest design since the wheel."
