CUERO - Love for a family pet was almost a fatal mistake for a DeWitt County woman Sunday.
Carrie Krause, 37, suffered burns to her hands, feet and face trying to rescue her dog as fire destroyed her mobile home and killed the animal.
Citizens Air Medical helicopter took Krause to Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. She was discharged on Monday, said Dewey Mitchell of the hospital's public affairs office.
Neighbor Kandace Alcalias was taken to Cuero Community Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. She was treated and released.
The fire began about 6:30 p.m. Sunday at 262 Von Haefen Road off U.S. Highway 87 North about five miles from Cuero. It started on the stove while a meal was being cooked, said Cuero Fire Chief Butch Tolbert.
"I haven't been able to talk to the lady yet, so we don't know exactly what happened, but the stove looks like the origin," Tolbert said Monday.
The fire department responded with two engines, two tankers, a large tanker truck and about 15 volunteer firefighters.
A second mobile home nearby that was used for storage was also destroyed. Roy Buchhorn owns the mobile home that Krause rented.
