Q: I'm 32 and thinking about going back to school for my master's degree because of the slowing economy. Am I going to be the only person near my age in class?
A: Not at all. Nontraditional students are quite traditional at the University of Houston-Victoria. UHV has a diverse student population with ages ranging from 19 to 69. Our average student age is 30, so you should fit right in.
With today's rapidly changing world and ever advancing technology, adults returning to school to update and improve their skills are becoming increasingly common. All of us must become lifelong learners to be successful.
If the Texas Legislature allows UHV to add freshmen and sophomores, you'll certainly see a lot more younger faces on campus. But for the foreseeable future, the student body will include a strong representation of those who, in the past, were considered nontraditional students.
Q: I just retired, and I want to take some college courses to stay active. I don't really care about course credit, and I don't want to dig up my old transcripts to get admitted. Is there a way I can just sit in a class and listen?
A: If you don't want formal course credit for taking a class, you can audit it. Auditing allows you to participate in face-to-face or online classes without taking tests or writing papers. You also don't have to go through the admissions process.
What you will need to do is pick up a class auditing request form from the Bursar's Office in Room 114 of the University West building, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St. The class professor or school dean will need to approve your request. Remember, seat availability may play a role in whether permission is granted.
Then you'll need to give the approved form to the cashier, along with your residential tuition and fees for the class. There aren't any additional fees to register late if you are auditing, so you may still be able to take a class or two this semester, if you hurry.
