Ganado's run to the Class 1A, Division II semifinals was led by its defense.

The Indians allowed a total of 27 points in their bi-district, area and regional playoff wins.

Ganado was extremely tough against the run thanks in a large part to the defensive line.

The line was anchored by John Meyer, who was selected to the first-team defense of the Texas Sports Writers Association Class 1A All-State Football Team announced Monday.

The 5-foot-10, 220-pound senior had 131 tackles, including 20 sacks and 11 tackles for losses, caused five fumbles and recovered six fumbles.

"He was a hard worker," Ganado coach Mike Rabe said of Meyer. "He was not real tall and not real heavy, but he had a good motor on the football field, was very coachable and a very smart player. He was a real passionate player and the leader of our defensive line. The later in the season it got, the better he got."

Ganado senior linebacker Jonathan Fowler was selected to the second team.

Ganado junior defensive back Ross Rakowitz was picked for the third team along with Shiner senior defensive linemen Dalton Handley and Kody Boedeker and Yorktown junior kicker Connor Krcha.

Earning honorable mention were Ganado defensive back Donovan Foster, Shiner's Boedeker at center and Josh Greathouse at running back, Louise running back Kyle Lawson, Yorktown defensive lineman Kale Wagner and linebacker Loren Koehler, and Flatonia running back Adrian Lighteard and linebackers Alex Hernandez and Chris Migl.

The offensive player of the year was Cayuga running back Traylon Shead and the defensive player of the year was Archer City defensive back Sam Smith.

Kyle Lynch, who led Canadian to the Division I state championship, and Eddie Metcalf, who led Stratford to the Division II state title, were selected as co-coaches of the year.

  • "System did it". Oh please...how about taking an extra few seconds and checking your work? Maybe file that statement along with "I did the work but the dog ate my homework during the night so I don't have anything to turn in!"

Congratulations to the young man on his accomplishments as well as applause for the parents! Go Indians!

Now for the Advocate and the way the picture was posted . . . now that is the the funny story line! Oh yeah..you other two guys...sorry..we forgot to totally crop your parts out of the pic!

    Hook-em!

  • The Advocate never intended to run the picture that ran with this story on the web site. Our intention was to do what we did on the sports cover and just run a mugshot of John Meyer. We did take the mugshot, though, from the same photo that appeared on the web. When the photo was sent from the newsroom to the web site, the system inadverently posted the entire photo rather than the just the mugshot. We are now in the process of fixing that.

  • Meyer is my son he is the one on the left. This was taken during two a days. The advocate could have found a better picture. By the way for all of you wondering people. that is not a gang sign. Fabian is a good kid.

  • Thank you Jennifer. I think its sad that he has such an accomplishment and we do not even know which one he is in the picture, and that the picture itself is making people think of other things. Ganado, could you not have given a pic of him?

  • haha! I came here to say just that. WTF? Maybe he was letting you know just how many other people were in the picture.

  • Take your pick..he is alleged to be one of the three in the picture and since the Advocate did not put a tag line with the picture to note who if any of the three is the kid named all state, just take your time and just pick one from this picture that appears to have been taken back in "two a days"! Maybe it is the old guy with the beard or is that one of the coaches?!
