Ashley Waskow

NORDHEIM - Known as a quiet person, Nordheim High School senior Ashley Waskow has made a lot of noise in the FFA livestock during her career.

On Saturday Waskow's steer, Rocket a 1,420-pound crossbreed, took grand champion honors giving the 18-year-old an impressive fourth grand champion win. Waskow also won grand champion with her steers as a junior, freshman and eighth grader. As a sophomore she won reserve champion as she had as a sixth grader, her first year to show. She has also won three showmanship awards, including this year.

"You have to be out there with them every day," Waskow said as the key to her success. "You can't miss a day."

Waskow also achieved some success at last year's San Antonio Livestock Show calf scramble, earning an $800 gift certificate to purchase a heifer.

Waskow admits to being a little sad that Saturday's livestock show was her last, but plans to possibly pursue the cattle business after high school as well as becoming a registered nurse. She is currently taking classes through The Victoria College.

Active in other school activities including volleyball, basketball, and one-act play, Waskow said she cherishes the time she has spent in FFA, the last two years as the organization's treasurer.

"I've learned to be very responsible," she said. "FFA teaches you about life and gets you ready for a career."

FFA faculty advisor Ryan Struzyk thinks highly of Waskow.

"Ashley is a very quiet person, but will put her head down to do what needs to be done all the time, not matter what," he said.

She is the daughter of Jimmy and Connie Waskow who have a ranch near Nordheim.

"Dad only wanted me to show steers, but once I started I liked it a lot," said Waskow.

And during the last seven years, the judges have liked her steers a lot, too.
