July 7 - While enjoying an outing with a party of friends in the Warden pasture Sunday morning, Max Zahn, Victoria's popular barber, killed a large rattlesnake, shooting its head off. It was five feet long and had 12 rattlers, being within a few inches of Mr. Zahn when he noticed it.
July 9 - The Sunset has announced special round trip rates of $3 from Victoria to Houston and Galveston for Saturday, July 10. Also, the Sunset will run a special train from here to Cuero Monday for the Firemen's Celebration there. The train will leave here at 8 a.m. and returning leave Cuero at 1:30 o'clock Tuesday morning. The fare will be 50 cents for the round trip.

July 5 - Births: Roland Jr., a fine boy, made his arrival for Mr. and Mrs. Roland Albrecht at Pettus Monday, it has been learned here. Mrs. Albrecht formerly was Miss Helen Schrader of this city. Congratulations.
July 9 - Mrs. W.T. DeTar and children and Mrs. Clara E. Burke will leave Wednesday for an extended visit in West Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. Mrs. Burke will visit her sister, Mrs. Ralph O'Brein, at Phoenix while away.
July 11 - The coolest business house in Victoria now is the Manhattan Cafe, owned by George Totah and located on Main Street. A washed air cooling system has been installed and the cafe now offers every advantage of a big city restaurant.

July 6 - Mrs. R.R. Riggs entertained with a personal shower for her sister, Miss Marguerite Hartmen, bride-elect of Jimmy DeBoldt, on Tuesday evening. Mrs. Riggs was assisted by her daughter, Carole. The refreshment table was arranged with gaillardia. Red roses enhanced side tables in the den and other flowers were in the living room. Those attending were Grace Angerstein, Judy Shields, Linda McCown, Mrs. A.N. Hartman, Mrs. W.F. Wenk and Mrs. Lenora Hartman.
July 9 - Former District Attorney Wayne L. Hartman was appointed county judge yesterday by Commissioners Court to succeed Frank H. Crain, the new judge of the 135th District Court. Hartman said he will take the oath of office at 2 p.m. today if his bond as county judge arrives in time from San Antonio. He said he will be a candidate for county judge in the Democratic primary election in May.
July 10 - City engineers, the Victoria Civic Association and a cooperative property owner have collaborated in a project that is expected to further beautify City Park, save the Civic Association some money and ease one of the city's worst traffic situations, Mayor Pro Tem T.O. Miracle said yesterday. It began when the city asked Mrs. Pauline Brown, owner of Palms Hotel at the Corner of Bridge and North Streets, if she would remove some tall palm trees which were blocking the view for motorists and also hindering installation of a traffic light. Mrs Brown readily agreed, but asked for time to find someone who would accept the five well-developed palms. City officials told her they could be transplanted to City Park. Again Mrs. Brown readily agreed, and the city, with the assistance of the Victoria Civic Association, have already attended to having the palms transplanted on McCright Drive, just off Vine Street.

July 5 - Construction in Victoria, as reflected in permits issued by the city, is moving along at a slightly better pace than at this time a year ago, due primarily to a $6 million-plus boost from weather related repairs after the March hailstorm.
July 6 - Victoria residents interested in the plight of Michael and Marcella Trubka, Czech aliens facing deportation, obtained pledges of help for the couple at the congressional level Thursday. Supporters of the Trubkas called the Washington office of U.S. Rep. Bill Patman, a former co-worker of Mrs. Trubka said Thursday, and the Victoria headquarters of his Congressional opponent, Rep. Mac Sweeney.
Ganado - A Ganado man sustained cuts and abrasions to his head and hands plus other internal injuries Thursday while trying to cut the top out of an empty drum with a cutting torch. Clarence Van Houten, 44, of 2131 E. Sutherland, was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. He was stabilized and later transferred to Victoria. Workmen said the explosion ripped the top of the barrel off with such force that it broke rafters in the ceiling of the garage.
July 8 - Inez Davidson became the bride of Jame LeVert Brady on Saturday at 3 p.m. in a wedding ceremony held in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Wofford of Victoria, sister and brother-in-law of the bride. The Rev. Fred Fellers of Houston, nephew of the bride, solemnized the couple's vows.
July 10 - A small delegation of property owners on Timberline Road appeared before the court objecting to the court's conditional decision to rename the road Reimann Road. In May, the court agreed to the name change after receiving a petition bearing signatures of a number of property owners, but made that action conditional because not all residents of the road had been contacted. Monday, objections were heard from people who had not been included in the original petition.
July 11 - Stroman and Victoria High Students Tuesday night said the high school campuses will face crowded cafeterias, poor morale and increased alcohol and drug use if the campuses are closed next fall. The closed campus move, which Victoria school trustees, voted for last Monday was called a "wise decision" by two adults, Joe Conti and John Crews, but most of the crowd of the citizens' hearing appeared to oppose the decision.
