Alternative to being Democrat is worse

Editor, the Advocate:

I am consistently amused by the sheer idiocy of those attempting to paint a negative image of Democrats. Think Pelosi is bad? She pales in comparison to such villains as raving lunatic Rush Limbaugh, who consistently promotes racism and hatred of gays. Take the fear-mongering Bush, who lied about WMDs to justify the war in Iraq and furthered destruction of the environment by subsidizing foreign oil and dirty coal over alternative energy. Of course, who can forget his subordinate Dick Cheney, who authorized the undoing of 20 years of C.I.A. work and recently lied in court about the "Scooter" Libby scandal? For this reason, it gives me great pleasure to respond to the June 21 guest columnist, Alton Tupa.

I suggest to Mr. Tupa to research his information more thoroughly before trying to influence peoples' opinions - an Internet search can produce anything you want it to. Not only does he grossly exaggerate Obama's position on the Second Amendment, he is wrong in saying that drug cartels exclusively use automatic weapons, grenades and rocket launchers. In fact, an estimated 2,000 firearms are smuggled everyday across the border, the majority of which are purchasable at gun stores.

Tupa is also incorrect about energy policy. Not only is the Gulf of Mexico already in a drilling boom producing a quarter of our domestic oil, initial drilling admittedly had little effect for years. And increased CAFE standards are undoubtedly worth it if they help conserve our dwindling resources while alternative fuels are developed. Also, let's not forget who originally lauded the cap-and-trade programs that Tupa now claims raises energy prices: Former presidential candidate John McCain, who, speaking of, just yesterday said it was imperative to board a North Korean vessel suspected of transporting a nuclear weapon, although North Korea has stated in the past that this would be considered an act of war. Imagine the nuclear chaos we avoided by electing a Democrat!

It's interesting that Tupa accuses the president of taxing the poor "who can least afford it" by instating a tax on beer, wine, soda and cigarettes, when these items are in fact luxuries that shouldn't even be in the hands of the truly poor. Perhaps these taxes are offset by the tax cut Obama earlier provided 95 percent of Americans.

Truth be told - it may not be "great" to be a Democrat, but it sure is better than the alternative.

  • Only about 45% of federal revenue is obtained from income taxes. The rest is obtained primarily from payroll and corporate taxes, taxes that we all pay.

Anyway it is silly to talk about tax cuts when this years deficit will be nearly three trillion dollars. As I have said before it's not the taxes it's the spending. In 2008 mandatory spending was 62% of all federal spending, this does not include the mandatory spending forced upon the states.

In 2019 mandatory spending will increase to 72% of total federal spending. Sooner or later (probably sooner) there will come a day of reckoning. We can all blame who we want but in the end it will make little difference.

  • Mike said,"

    1. They now want transparency and accountability
    2. They now want to rein in spending
    3. They now fear government
    4. They now constantly nitpick
    5. They now have selected selective memories

    "

And you're right, until their man is running the show, because as always "this time will be different."

  • On a personal note, I believe I can relate to what is happening.
I was really disappointed as the New York Times and Washington Post published the pentagon’s propaganda in the lead up to the Iraq War… I made a pledge of “never no more.”.. I read everything that I could get my hands on concerning the Iraq War… I could not do anything about it but I could inform others…

I think the current protesters have a guilty conscience about the past eight years; so they remove it from their memory but vowed never to let it happen again.

    2. They now want to rein in spending
    3. They now fear government
    4. They now constantly nitpick
    5. They now have selected selective memories

Anyway, that just my personal opinion; but I think for many it is from#6, I did not mention....I could be wrong.

  • But you said "less income tax witholding on couples making less than $250,000" and that is not true. The actual # is couples making less than $175,000. to see any less income tax witholding in their checks. You see, I do not get that extra $13 a pay period. And he campaigned that taxes would not be increased on any family making less than $250,000 but that remains to be seen.

If you want to parse words and say that I’m wrong,OK , “I am wrong

” Middle-class families will see their taxes cut — and no family making less than $250,000 will see their taxes increase,” the campaign said. “For 95 percent of workers and their families — 150 million workers overall — the ‘Making Work Pay’ credit will provide a refundable tax cut of $500 for workers or $1,000 for working couple.”

That is the one way street I travel on because in nearly four years I have corrected many conservatives with sourced information and to this day, I can count on one hand how many times they have come back and admitted they were wrong…. They will just go away for a few days and come back for another challenge.

    I was wrong… I was wrong…. I was wrong… See that was relatively easy.

If you make as many statements is I do in this forum…. Well anyway I always operate on a 80/20 basis… I can live with being wrong 20% of the time…. Others might think that that number is higher; I can live with that.

  • As soon as everyone gets rid of the talking points like the Canadian Health Care System and, personal stories and just stick to the actual facts; a dialogue can begin.

I just heard a brilliant idea from Ed Schultz; we have spent millions sending legislators to Iraq for fact finding missions…. It would not cost too much to send republicans and democrats representatives along with reporters and economists to Canada for a healthcare fact finding mission.. They could issue their bipartisan report to Congress…… The naysayers pick and choose flaws in other nation’s Health Care plans; insinuating it cannot be improved. Wrong, we have working models in the United States that need to be looked that.

No, what we practice is aggressive political solipsism.

All this fear about 1,300 pages without transparency is just not realistic..Sure people like you and I will take the time to read the bill over a period of the few months but most of America will not..No one questioned the Medicare part D when the republicans kept the bill open until the wee hours in the morning, twisting arms, without a regard for the deficit. Most seniors still don’t know what was in that bill… I know many senators became lobbyist after that bill was passed…. The years 2000-2008 did exist.

This president has been in office for about 6 ½ months and a few selected partisans are getting hysterical but they remained relatively calm; as polls showed that 89% of the American people thought this country was going in the wrong direction….. That level of fear has been reduced to 42%.

The selective outrage is seen here as fear mongering…. I’ve been around the block a few times.

  • Ahhhh Mike but you are wrong. The withholding "tax cut" (that $13 dollars extra a pay period) was for couples earning less than $175,000.00 per year.

    July 3, 2009 at 11:12 a.m.

  • I pretty much covered that when I said that the tax brackets did not change….. Nothing prevents a taxpayer from adjusting their W4 to maintain their last years take home pay.

The key word is “targeted”; Obams's tax cut was for those making less than $250,000.

The Bush tax cuts favored the wealthy supporting their belief in a “trickle down” economic system……

I don’t see why this calls for an argument...That pretty much describes our progressive tax system.

  • Talk about phrasing words!
If I made $50,000 last year, had $500 per month deducted from my check, ($6,000) and my total tax obligation was $3,000 - I got a $3,000 return. It still does not change the fact that I paid $3,000 in tax.

So now this year I make the same $50,000, have $400 per month deducted from my check, ($4,800) and my total tax obligation is again $3,000 - I will get an $1,800 return. Still does not change the fact that I padi $3,000 in tax.

I know the point has been made thousands of times that the Bush tax cuts favored the rich. The point that those same people are not making is that everyone else saw a cut as well. If I get a 2% cut, and my boss gets a 5% cut, my 2% is still 2%. It is typical democrat envy, which is a deadly sin.

  • Phrasing words?

Payroll software adjustments were made to take out less income tax withholding for anyone making less than $250,000 and $250 was disbursed to those on Social Security…The income tax brackets were not changed, so for some it will mean a lesser refund next year….Tax cut

The Obama Administration is talking about letting the Bush tax cuts targeted to the wealthiest 2%, expire next year..The conservatives call that a tax increase.

    Can’t have it both ways.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 7 — Families earning more than $1 million a year saw their federal tax rates drop more sharply than any group in the country as a result of President Bush’s tax cuts, according to a new Congressional study.

  • VBB...I must be far wealthier than I thought because I sure haven't gotten a tax cut either. I did see an increase in the bottom line on my pay statement but that wasn't because of a cut in taxes -- it was only a cut in WITHHOLDING. My tax RATE hasn't changed. The taxes will still be due next April.

    July 3, 2009 at 7:41 a.m.

  • VBB- it is a waste of time with him. He sounds young and uneducated to me. How pathetic his life must be to spend all his time attacking people and grasping at straws. I think the rest of us whether we agree with him or not should stop responding, then maybe he will go away. ;)

    July 3, 2009 at 2:48 a.m.

  • OMG......the letter you are applauding stated Obama HAS ALREADY GIVEN 95% of Americans a TAX CUT. I am not a recipient & I know I am not in the elite 5% that wouldn't have gotten a TAX CUT. JEEZ, for the love of all that is good in the world, learn to read & comprehend!

    July 3, 2009 at 12:39 a.m.

  • Taxes made? or paid? this year.....yes, I understand what I paid in April were based on last years tax codes. So ergo, where's the tax cut for 95% of Americans that supposedly has already happened according to this man?

    July 3, 2009 at 12:02 a.m.

  • Ummm, I didn't get a tax cut nor has anyone that I know, so 95% is not correct.

    July 2, 2009 at 11:56 p.m.

  • 95%? I didn't get a tax cut & I know that I am far from the elite 5% that was left out. Sorry buddy, if you believe that 95% of us got a tax cut you are as deluded as you are accusing conservatives of being. And, how elitist of you to say poor people should not drink or smoke! There YOU people go again minding business that ain't yours to mind. Hypocrite.
