South Central Amateur Baseball League Championship
Victoria Rosebuds vs. Bernardo Bears
Game 1: Saturday, 1 p.m., Riverside Stadium
Game 2: Sunday, 1 p.m., Bernardo
Game 3, if necessary: Following Game 2
The Victoria Rosebuds admit they're not what they used to be.
"We used to be a whole lot better," catcher Geoff Wheeler said. "When we started, we were all playing college ball. Now we're getting a little older. But we can still play."
The Rosebuds have played well enough this season to move into the South Central Texas Amateur Baseball League's championship series.
The Rosebuds will open the best-of-three game series against the Bernardo Bears on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Riverside Stadium.
Game 2 will be Sunday at 1 p.m. in Bernardo. Game 3, if necessary, would follow Game 2.
The Rosebuds have a 12-2 record this season and claimed 1-0 and 4-3 wins over Schulenburg in the semifinal round last weekend. Bernardo defeated La Grange to move into the finals.
"It's nothing special," Wheeler said of the Rosebuds' success. "It's just see the ball, hit the ball and catch the ball."
Will Wheeler, Colby Andres, Clayton Meyer, Kyle Newman and Randy Aguayo, who all played high school baseball in Victoria, have pitched for the Rosebuds.
Bay City graduate Keith Kieschnick, who is currently pitching for Texas A&M-Kingsville, has been the Rosebuds' leading hitter. Kieschnick has played in 10 games and hit seven home runs.
Newman and Aguayo have been the Rosebuds' other top hitters.
"We play good defense," Geoff Wheeler said. "We're not killing the ball, but we've been getting enough hits to win."
