DEVELOPING:

— CALIFORNIA SPECIAL ELECTION: Developing after polls close at 8 p.m.

CALIF SENATE-FIORINA'S DILEMMA

WASHINGTON — In the weeks since Carly Fiorina announced her run for a California Senate seat, the former Hewlett-Packard Co. chief executive has been working to convince conservatives that she is one of them. She signed a pledge opposing any increase in income taxes, blasted the spending in the proposed health care overhaul, took up the cause of farmers who want relief from government-imposed water restrictions, and has sent a steady volley of shots aimed at the record of Democrat Barbara Boxer, who is up for re-election next year. But in doing so, Fiorina is walking a political tightrope that has proved the downfall of many Republicans before her. By Kevin Freking.

HOMECOMING GANG RAPE

RICHMOND — Not far from the pulsating music and dancing of the high school homecoming, young men were drinking in a dimly lit courtyard out of sight of chaperones. A friend invited a 16-year-old girl to join them, and she started drinking hard liquor, too. Soon another group of young men came over. The ingredients for tragedy all were present, experts say. A bunch of men. A vulnerable young woman. Alcohol. What happened next, authorities say, degenerated into a two-hour-long gang rape by as many as 10 males. By Terry Collins and Evelyn Nieves.

SWITZERLAND-POLANSKI

BELLINZONA, Switzerland — Switzerland's highest criminal court is expected to decide in two or three weeks whether to release film director Roman Polanski on bail pending a decision on his extradition to the United States. U.S. authorities want Polanski to face justice in Los Angeles for a sex case 32 years ago.

HEALTH CARE RATINGS

LOS ANGELES — California has unveiled a new consumer report card on five health insurers — and none got the top rating. The report on the Department of Insurance Web site grades PPO insurers in such categories as diabetes care and cancer checks. It can award up to four stars.

PANDA CUB

SAN DIEGO — Out of 6,300 suggestions from panda fans around the world, San Diego Zoo managers have chosen a name for a baby panda born this summer. The 3-month-old, 13.2-pound ball of black-and-white fur was named Yun Zi, or "Son of Cloud" in Chinese, after his mother, Bai Yun, whose name means "White Cloud." There are only 14 giant pandas in the United States, including five at the San Diego Zoo.
