ABOUT THE SIDEWALK PROJECT
Plans to design and engineer the downtown sidewalk and street improvement project were approved in January by a split city council.
It voted 6-1 to award a $325,300 contract to Urban Engineering of Victoria to do the study. The dissenting vote came from Council Member David Hagan.
Residents could learn Tuesday whether the city will move forward with a controversial beautification and sidewalk improvement proposal for downtown Victoria.
The city council will receive the results of a consultant's study of the issue, and Mayor Will Armstrong said he will poll the council to see what it wants to do.
"I asked to see the study and I was pleased with what I saw," he said.
The council meeting will begin at 5 p.m. in the Council Chamber at 107 W. Juan Linn St.
Armstrong said he will give the public a chance to comment before asking for a consensus from the council.
City staff had presented the council with sidewalk improvement options ranging in cost from $2.6 million to $4.5 million. The work would be done in conjunction with a downtown utility replacement project that will result in streets and sidewalks being damaged.
The project would cover a five-block section of Main Street between Commercial and Juan Linn streets. It would also cover sections of Forest, Constitution and Bridge streets surrounding De Leon Plaza.
Council Member Paul Polasek said the cost estimates in the study range from $2.3 to 2.8 million for the three options, which is considerably less than the original estimates.
Lynn Short, public works director, said the options are doing the work with plain concrete, with colored or textured concrete, or with brick pavers. He said he's prepared to make a recommendation to the council, but would not disclose what it is before Tuesday.
Armstrong said he's ready to do the project.
"I don't think that any living adult will see another improvement project done on Main Street," he said. "So I think this is the time to do it right."

I totally agree with justmythought. Why can't yall just put the money in the bank and leave it, instead of letting it burn a hole in your pockets! What's the city manager's take on this? Hey, just thought of an idea! That money can be used for the city employees' raises! What about that Mr. Mayor?
July 7, 2009 at 10:18 a.m.The sidewalk downtown? How about fixing some sidewalks people actually use. OR BETTER YET, how about fixing Laurent from where you stopped. My vehicle axles cannot take many more drives from Airline to Mockingbird on Laurent.
July 7, 2009 at 8:12 a.m.Downtown? Really, Will? Who goes downtown except for lawyers, law enforcement, oh, and you? Don't waste my money on an area of town that very few residents visit. Why don't we use it to improve everyones life, maybe reduce taxes, maybe fix the streets. How about saving it. There are many other options than wasting it downtown. Come on, Will, you are blowing it. I am trying to put gas in my truck and you are worried about colored or textured concrete to walk on.
July 7, 2009 at 7:28 a.m.Well Will, As long as your ready to do this and your happy with the results then go ahead and spend all my tax dollars as you see fit. I know you will do what you want anyhow.
July 6, 2009 at 6:58 p.m.Be aware that next time we get to vote on you and your "team" I will make sure to get new blood in office... Have a great day and go ahead and raise my property tax another 20% if the budget gets a little tight.. I want to give, give, give, til it hurts..
I guess Will did not attend the Tea Party. I did see Mr. Polasek there. In fact Paul even spoke. Were those words for every taxing entity BUT the City of Victoria? Perhaps we will find out next May, who the Tea Party was for.
