The city of Victoria will be rebuilding a section of Red River at Vine Street and paving it in concrete to get rid of the washboard surface. It will also fill in the deep ditches along the street.

WINNING BID
The city had budgeted $1.85 million for the Red River Street project.
The winning bid from Triple B Services of Huffman came in at about half that amount, even though the contractor will be paving the street with concrete.
TO-DO LIST
Other major street projects planned by the city:
The city plans to award a contract this fall to rebuild Laurent Street between Airline Road and Sam Houston Drive. Construction could begin in January.
The Sam Houston Drive reconstruction project is now being designed. It's scheduled for construction in late 2010.
Don't ask Winston Wheeler what he thinks about the section of Red River Street leading to Victoria's Riverside Park unless you really want to know.
Baseball fan that he is, Wheeler goes to Riverside regularly. But he tries to avoid using Red River.
"It's terrible," Wheeler said. "It's just rough as heck."
Fortunately for Wheeler and the thousands of others who go to the zoo, golf course and other parts of the park, the city plans to rebuild that part of Red River.
City Engineer Ken Gill said the contractor, Triple B Services of Huffman, should begin work on the $865,670 project this week. The company has a year to finish the work.
"But we expect them to be finished sooner than that," Gill said.
The project involves rebuilding Red River between Main and Vine streets and replacing the asphalt with concrete paving.
Drainage pipe will be installed in the deep ditches, which will then be covered with dirt.
An eight-foot-wide sidewalk for pedestrians and bikers will also be built.
"That's historically been a very bad section of Red River," said Lynn Short, Victoria's public works director. "That area is really bad."
Vehicles driving toward the park go down a hill and begin braking for the stop sign at Vine Street. That puts pressure on the asphalt, causing it to shift and create a washboard effect.
"So, to correct that problem for good, we're doing that in concrete," Short said.
The city also has long-range plans to rebuild the rest of Red River in Riverside Park and between Main and Sam Houston Drive. The $22.7 million project has not yet been funded and there is no projected start date.
Comments
Red River needs to be repaird all the way to the entance of Rosebud Stadium.
How about making all city council members drive Vine Street all the way to where it runs into 87 every day of their lives as well. They might find the roller coaster ride a bit much.
July 13, 2009 at 1:04 p.m.Why did they just not start at the entrance to Riverside park and go up? All they are doing is polishing a t--d. There is still going to be a bad road on each side of the new road. This is about as smart as the new Victoria slogan and logo. A bad idea that needed more input.
