A small crowd rocked out to heavy metal music Saturday at Riverside Park.

Metal Fest 2009, held at Lions Club at Riverside Park, brought in five bands from Austin and Harlingen for a night of good music.

Having less people at Metal Fest made the concert more intimate, said Tyler Tordt, of Victoria.

"I wish there would be a better turnout, but it's also cool to have this little people so you can get closer to the bands," Tordt, 18, said. "We just finished chilling with Within White Shadows for like 30 minutes."

Locals who attended said they liked having something to do on a Saturday night.

Metal Fest gave Carlos Rivas, 35, another fun option. He brought his 14-year-old son, Ethan, to see headliner Die Among Heroes perform.

"It's good that they're bringing them down here to Victoria," said Rivas of Victoria. "There ain't nothing to do. You go to the movies, you go to the mall, then what? There ain't anything else."

Frank Flores of Victoriahad also heard of a band performing at Metal Fest after hearing about them through Myspace.

"I'm checking out Immortal Guardian," Flores said. "I've seen the guitarist open up before. He was in a different band called Omega."

Bringing in more fun things to do was promoter David Smith's intention in hosting Metal Fest, Smith also wanted to give young bands more chances to get to perform live.

"I just brought it out here to Victoria to give people something to do," Smith said. "I'm also trying to get more fans involved in something like this. We want to give these bands a lot more exposure than what they deserve."

More concerts need to happen here at the Crossroads, said Martin Cavazos of Victoria.

"It's all about the jam, Cavazos, 42, said. "I'm here to see Seven Sky. Those guys are my boys. They rock. They're so in sync."

Bands pass through here all the time to get to bigger cities, he said.

"We're the Crossroads to everything, man," Cavazos said. "All the bands go from here to Houston to San Antonio and Corpus. Everywhere. They come through here first. And they need to stop here. Victoria's a small town, but we rock."

  • I was there and all the bands that played were all awesome. Die Among Heros were great but, Seven Sky were just amazing with their awesome melodic/heavy rock music. I wish ya'll would have got them on video on top of this page. The first band is NOT Seven Sky, their drummer was kind enough to let White Within' Shadows use his drumset. Check them out on myspace. Type in Sev7sky and you can hear great musicianship mixed with amazing lyrics and structure. Can't wait til' I see them play 3 shows in San Antonio this weekend.

  • I think some people forget why we are doing this. As a kid I attended alot of these metal shows. Now that we're older we're trying to give back and let the kids experience what we did at that age. If you bring 80-100 people to your show, good for you. It's not a competition to us and it's certainly not for the money. The important thing is that all the bands that performed and all the people that attended had a great time. That's all that matters. Who cares if one show gets coverage and another doesn't. If you want coverage then ask for it. You don't have to complain and bad mouth other promotions.

  • "We want to give these bands a lot more exposure than what they deserve." This part has been corrected, it should be in the paper tomorrow: what I meant was the exposure that they deserve. As far as the other comments toward this article go, everyone has their own opinions, but I'm not hurt or quitting what we do. I respect the comments here, but I think that 2 days in the newspaper, a meet & greet @ Hastings, putting up some flyers in town and MySpace bulletins is a lot of "promotion". It takes a lot of work to put a show together. We will continue to work with new & upcoming bands to give them the exposure "that they deserve". Anyway, stay tuned for more! Oh, and deathmetalkid, all I did was call vicad and asked for some coverage- so maybe instead of being "insulted and offended", you should just give them a call.

  • Never before in the history of mankind has it been easier to reach out to people all over the world. Online communitieslike MySpace, make meeting new friends with similar interests incredibly easy. MySpace is a great place to share tips, ideas and stories about the things you find most interesting. If you have a question about your hobby, you can easily find the answer through your network of members with similar interests.

  • Ive been bringing extreme metal & hardcore bands and tours major and minor to victoria tx for 10 yrs. Im not knocking the bands. But when you book a show there really should be promotion. The guy who runs rock your yellow pages doesnt do that and that is why no one shows up. my crowds bring in 80 - 150 every show. Thats normal for a houston turnout at a local or minor metal tour or show. So to pull those numbers in victoria is awesome. But you have to promote. Some one said that they wished this kind of thing would happen in victoria more often... HELLO DUDE. Where you been at for the last ten years? i find this type of coverage on this show quite offensive and insulting, being that ive put loads of time and money into this.. building an underground metal scene in victoria. the money doesnt matter.. im about the music. the underground victoria metal scene are my family. this is not a trend. its a way of life. deathmetalkid productions will continue with more shows/tours soon.. get ready victoria!!

  • Smith said...."We want to give these bands a lot more exposure than what they deserve."" So, the bands don't deserve exposure? Are they that bad? And you wonder why nobody showed up?
