The workouts will run from 8 a.m.-1 p.m. with the varsity and junior varsity at the MHS senior campus. All freshman practices will be at the Stroman campus.

The first day of full-contact drills with the teams working out from 5-9 p.m. starting Aug. 10. The Vipers open their season on Aug. 28, at San Antonio Taft. The first home game at Memorial Stadium is Sept. 11 against El Campo.

  • Here’s my theory on the lack of community enthusiasm for the upcoming football season. Take a look at the recent success stories in the area. I believe the common denominator for programs such as Calhoun, Cuero, El Campo and Refugio to name a few, is strong leadership at the top. All of those programs have Athletic Directors that the players, coaches and community have come to know as fair minded and supportive of all programs and staff, not just football.

The Athletic Director at VISD may have the support of our local sports reporters, (pretty obvious) but keep in mind you are seeing and hearing what the Athletic Office wants you to know. Ask some of the former coaches and student athletes that worked and played under this system and you will probably get a different perspective. Of course if you do that, you might find the Athletic Office a little less than forthcoming with future interview requests.

I have a suggestion for the School Board to consider. Since this is the last year of consolidation, we need to open the Athletic Director position up for candidates. I am not suggesting that all positions need to re-apply for their job by any means. I am stating that since the current position is Athletic Director/Head Football Coach, the “new” position will be Athletic Director. This is not a current position at VISD and as such should be open to candidates. I expect that Bob Moore already has a plan to ensure there will be no leadership changes occurring in the Athletic Office come next year.

  • With the kids always hearing that type of attitude who would want to be good enough. If you could only hear what these kids say after a loss about the comments from adults! shame on you. I have three boys one graduated in 2008 and the other just going into 9th grade. The support that this town has shown the kids is very poor. When kids are supported they perform at higher levels.
