One Victoria man is in the hospital and a suspect is on the run after a stabbing and shooting in the 1700 block of East Rosebud Avenue late Wednesday night.
The Victoria Police Department were first called to a disturbance in the area where several gunshots were heard, but nothing turned up, Sgt. Adam Nieto said.
About 25 minutes after searching the block, police received a call about a 30-year-old man who had walked into Citizens Medical Center from an incident in the area of the disturbance, Nieto said. The victim was taken to Citizens by private vehicle, he said.
Police have identified a 23-year-old man as a suspect in the case. Names of both the victim and the suspect have not been released because the case is still under investigation, Nieto said.
Nieto was unsure where the victim was shot and stabbed, he said.
East Rosebud Avenue resident Nathina Schmidt was outside when she heard shots fired and called 911.
"All I heard was six to eight gunshots and a group of women screaming," said Schmidt, who ran inside after hearing the dispute.
"I thought, 'I better get inside as quick as possible,'" she said.
Another neighbor, who asked that her name not be used because she feared for her safety, said one of the bullets hit a window in her house.
"I was shaken up," she said.
The woman heard what sounded like fireworks, she said. Within seconds, glass blew into the home, and she dropped to the floor to dial 911.
"It was unbelievable," she said.
Fragments of bullet casings were found in the debris of glass in the home, she said.
The woman added she must have heard anywhere from 15 to 20 gunshots.
"It sounded like a war zone," she said.
Several other residents who heard the gunshots and live in the surrounding area were fearful to talk about the incident.
Investigators are following several leads on the whereabouts of the suspect, Nieto said.

The man that was shot and stabbed is my son in law and the one that stabbed and shot him was my ex-son in law..and you better believe that he will be found and anyone that is hiding him as well.
July 31, 2009 at 10:13 a.m.What's sad is that only a small portion of what goes on is actually reported by the advocate and Newscenter 25. Okay, maybe sad is not the correct word. But people need to know more about what is really going on in this town....and it isn't pretty.
July 30, 2009 at 11:32 p.m.I agree. Put it all in the paper. The public will stand up eventually and run them out.
thanks law enforcement!
July 30, 2009 at 11:08 p.m.Thanks VA for bringing these acts of violence to the attention of Victoria. Honest and law abiding citizens need to start really supporting our law enforcement in this war against drugs, thugs, gangs, and violence. If we don't, it will continue to get worse year after year. God help us.
