The University of Houson-Victoria is ready for a party.

Gov. Rick Perry will be in Victoria on Thursday for the ceremonial signing of the bill granting admission of freshmen and sophomores to the University of Houston-Victoria in the fall of 2010.

Official word from the governor's office is yet to come, but Victoria officials already are making party preparations.

"Gov. Perry's willingness to come to Victoria for the ceremonial signing of House Bill 1056 is a fitting tribute to the hard work of our community to make the University of Houston-Victoria a four-year institution," Rep. Geanie Morrison, R-Victoria, said in a statement Thursday. "It was the support from our local leaders and Victoria residents that made this undertaking a reality."

Perry will be at the multi-purpose room in the University Center at UHV on Thursday. A time has yet to be set.

The community is encouraged to attend the event, said Randy Vivian, Victoria Chamber of Commerce president.

"The university is still coordinating with the governor's office to work out details, and we should hear something soon," he said.

HB 1056 was signed into law by Perry in June.

"This will be a ceremonial signing, and we want everybody to come out," Vivian said. "The community needs to come out and celebrate the fact that we have reached this great milestone."
