WESTHOFF - The Westhoff school district earned DeWitt County's only exemplary rating based on 2009 Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills results.
The kindergarten through eighth-grade district was rated as recognized in 2008.
"We are very fortunate that the students and teachers worked hard," superintendent Donnie Garrison said. "Of course, we have a small group of kids to work with, which means we can give them a lot of individual attention if we need them."
Westhoff students scored in the 99th percentile in reading, writing and science and 91 percent in math. Garrison said about 25 students were tested.
The only other DeWitt County school with a change in rating was the county's other K-8 school in Meyersville.
The district fell from exemplary to recognized, still an above-average rating.
"We went down because of our science scores," superintendent Laura Whitson said. "We know we need to work on it and already have plans in place to improve next year."
Meyersville scored 83 percent in science.
Other district scores included 96 percent in reading, 96 percent in writing, 99 percent in social studies and 95 percent in math.
Whitson said the district's small sample size, about 30 students, also affects the results: If one student stumbles in one area, it can have a big affect on the overall percentage.
Elsewhere in DeWitt County, the academically acceptable school districts are Cuero, Nordheim, Yoakum and Yorktown.
