NEAR EL CAMPO - An El Campo man and woman were killed when their vehicle ran off a county road early Saturday morning.
Driver Christopher Jones, 34, and passenger Erin Thonsgaard, 21, were heading west on County Road 362, three miles west of El Campo, Pierce Department of Public Safety Trooper Michael Hubenak said.
A final text message sent from Thonsgaard's phone at 1:36 a.m. led Hubenak to believe the double fatality happened about 2 a.m. No witnesses were reported.
The 2007 Ford Mustang was speeding when it skidded off the left side of the road, went through a ditch, went airborne, hit a tree and landed on its top on the opposite bank of the ravine, Hubenak said.
Both Jones and Thonsgaard were pronounced dead at the scene at 10:15 a.m. by Precinct 4 Justice of the Peace Timmy Drapela.
