SEADRIFT - Seadrift will be kicking off its 29th annual Shrimpfest this weekend at the town's bayfront.
New this year include a co-ed softball tournament, sand castle contest and a beer can regatta.
Other events include a 5K walk and run, volleyball, gumbo cook-off, poker run, shrimp eating, fireworks and concerts.
Turn-out the past couple of years has been slightly below the 3,000 mark, but this year's marketing strategy should help raise awareness and turn-out, said Jasmine Gordon, a member of the Seadrift Chamber of Commerce board of directors.
"I think that first off, the new events, new updates and design are getting everyone excited about it," said Gordon.
The marketing plan this year has been to create a new outdoor banner, revamp the chamber's Web site, increase advertisement and have pre-sale merchandise available online as well as two locations limited shrimpfest memorabilia like T-shirts and glasses.
The Web site receives at least 50 hits a day from around Texas and the chamber has advertisements on three local radio stations and in 13 area newspapers.
"We have hits all the way up to the Dallas and Fort Worth area, even South Padre Island," she said.
She added Victoria is leading the Web site hit count, with San Antonio, Houston and other cities in the Crossroads region trailing close behind.
"A lot of the people on the city council have voiced their opinion on how good it's looking," Gordon said about the marketing scheme and community feedback.
