Editor, the Advocate:
I have been reading about the effort and time our local leaders have been putting into securing a credited four-year university in Victoria. As a lifetime resident and small business owner, I am concerned about where the campus would be located.
I heard that the county has offered 200 acres next to the airport, but the campus there would need a road from Loop 463. Even if the land is free, the cost of the road and utilities needed, plus storm drainage, would cost $4 million to $6 million just to reach the 200 acres. I would think that being next to the airport would cause a limit on building height and a noise level that would always be a problem.
I would like to suggest that we use the Victoria Industrial Park, which has been sitting idle for about seven years and cost - we, the taxpayers - more than $1 million to $2 million to build.
The site has 320 acres and is shovel-ready for a project that will employ 300-plus taxpayers.
The site has all the necessary utilities and storm drainage on site. The site is just minutes from the north and south side of Victoria.
I know that this location would save taxpayers millions of dollars in taxes. By the dollars saved, maybe we could repair and build a few new streets.

Can someone please tell me where the dorms are currently being built? I had a freind whose kis is looking at possibly playing here next year and was asking a ton of questions? Does UHV have a dining facility, and when will the housing be completed?
July 27, 2009 at 1:08 p.m.Is there some way to bump this up so it stays where it will get attention!!! This is a wonderful idea and needs to be strongly considered!!! The location is ready, and very visible. Would be an outstanding option.
July 27, 2009 at 12:56 p.m.If I'm thinking of the right place you can get close on Google Maps - try 8308 Lone Tree Rd.
June 17, 2009 at 9:41 a.m.I have to say that this idea makes perfect sense. This stretch of land has easy access and is highly visible. The only construction that has taken place there is the FedEx depot and another Industrial company. The other side of the industrial park is just an empty field waiting to be used for development. I totally agree with this idea and give Mr. Davis kudos for thinking it up. I myself am a University employee and hope that this will come to fruition after Gov. Perry has signed the bill.
June 17, 2009 at 9:38 a.m.Uhh....where is industrial park?
June 17, 2009 at 9:26 a.m.Victoria has a freeway? I was unaware.
June 15, 2009 at 6:58 p.m.the location would allow a quick access from the freeway! it would also grow the city that way.
June 15, 2009 at 6:09 p.m.that's is a brilliant idea!
June 15, 2009 at 6:05 p.m.Looks like Mr. Davis has discovered a 'bird-in-hand' by suggesting the use of the Industrial Park for the UHV's new campus. This appears to be a 'win-win' for both parties. The City and County of Victoria needs to move quickly to secure a deal with UHV for a new campus location and this location would be the 'shovel ready' location that could clench the deal.
June 15, 2009 at 6:03 p.m.But don't get your hopes up. Common sense, like money is hard to come by now-a-days.
Mr. Davis, Keep this nugget of an idea in front of the City and County officials. Someone will eventually listen to your logic.

June 14, 2009 at 10:22 a.m.that is the most logical thing to do! use that industrial park it's ready for business to come in!
I remember something about land on the north side of town being offered by a landowner. Anyone else remember any mention of that offer?
