PUBLIC MEETING
Goliad County will present its case against Uranium Energy Corp. to the public.
When: Saturday, June 27, at 9:30 a.m.
Where: The Julie Wemberly Memorial Homemaking Building in downtown Goliad
Goliad County commissioners on Tuesday tabled a vote to decide whether they will sue Uranium Energy Corp. in state court.
Commissioners want more public input before they decide to go to trial, they say.
A judge dismissed the county's federal lawsuit two weeks ago by saying the case belonged in a lower court or elsewhere.
Commissioners went into executive session on Tuesday.
"We came out of executive session and tabled any actions until after our public meeting on June 27," Commissioner Jim Kreneck said.
Commissioners will present their case to the public, seek input and then decide if they'll sue again, Kreneck said.
Jim Blackburn, the county's Houston-based environmental attorney, said he made no recommendations. "We weighed different courses of action," he said.
A contested case hearing is already under way, which allows the county and the company to president evidence for and against a mining permit. The groups meet again in January.
Goliad County sued Uranium Energy Corp. in March 2008 for allegations of well-water contamination. The company denies the allegations.
