The King of Pop is dead.

The news that Michael Jackson, 50, died Thursday from cardiac arrest has sent shock waves around the world, even in Victoria. Love him or hate him, his unexpected death garnered reactions from all ages.

John Mays, 60, of Victoria, grew up with Jackson's music, he said. While Mays thought the moonwalking singer was talented, he doesn't believe the man was an icon.

"He was a performer, but he wasn't John Wayne or Jimmy Stewart, people that I think are icons," he said. "Icons are people that we can look up to and I didn't look up to him. I enjoyed his music and he had a lot of talent, but his life turned out tragic."

Laura Dolezal agreed.

"His music was great, but he was strange," she said, adding that her favorite song of his was "Billie Jean."

In recent years, Jackson has been plagued with both legal and health problems, including his widely publicized 2005 trial on child molestation charges, of which he was acquitted.

Despite his past scandals and controversy, Valerie Gruen of Victoria still considers him worthy of his place in history.

"I didn't listen to his music, but he was truly a music icon," the 19-year-old said. "Everyone knew who Michael Jackson was and what he did. He sold a lot of records."

Mike Delgado, 48, was one of the millions of people who bought Jackson's breakthrough "Thriller" album.

"I love 'Thriller.' I listened to it all the time," he said. "I'm sad to hear he died. He was definitely unique."

Tim Wells, of Victoria, was less forgiving of Jackson's later years, when he became less known for his music and more known for odd private life.

"He was nuts. Talented, but nuts," Wells said. "It's too bad, too. He could have done more if he hadn't gone off the deep end."

  • Hey pot! ....I mean BigJ.......MJ is a celebrity, he chose that life, he also chose to do what he did with the children he kept company with. Now, I'm not saying he actually raped little boys, I am saying what he did did seem a tad suspicious. He did pay out big bucks to keep them all quiet also. Since he decided to make money off the public, he also opened himself up to public criticism. People have the freedom to say what they will about him one way or another without worrying about attacks from you. Lord knows if he were white or Republican you would be talking more smack than anyone else. His death means very little to me regardless of his deeds as i was not a fan & people more important to me have died with little or no fanfare. Such is life.

  • Michael Jackson made is mark in the world by being a consummate performer, changing forever how we view music video's. video's. He truly understood his craft, and did it well. I have fond memories of trying to "moonwalk", just like him. I enjoy watching his video's and listening to his music. Again, it's terribly sad how his life turned out, for whatever reason. No negativity here. RIP

  • Disgusted, outraged or whatever you want to call it, the fact of the matter is that celebrities and politicians, by the very fact of there own profession, open themselves up to the public s scrutiny.

MJ did in fact sing some great songs, he wasn't the first and he won't be the last to produce great music. Just a matter of taste I suppose.

Any individual that makes there living in the spotlight should expect scrutiny, they chose a career where they are subject to criticism of every little thing they do professionally or personally.

Some people who read of said celebrities or politicians personal acts don't like them. That's to be expected, and it SHOULD be understood by said persons themselves.

They can whine all they want, but it is the price they have to pay for the profession they choose.

MJ loved the positive press when he showed up at one of his court hearings in pajama bottoms, Paris Hilton loved the press when she was portrayed in a positive light. But whoa to publicity when they are portrayed negatively.

To even suggest that others opinions after said persons death is uncalled, for is to deny what the said persons themselves built there public image and fortune on.

  • im sad to say im ashamed to live in this town. there is so much hate here. everything that comes out of some of your post is negative no matter what the situation is.

  • Fan or Not, he was a great entertainer and millions will remember him for many years to come. What ever he did in his life, that's between him and GOD now. "If you can't say something good, don't say anything at all."

  • Big J, of course you never judge a persons guilt before a trial jury has been heard from, Oh no , never.

    June 26, 2009 at 5:33 p.m.

  • Some of the comments made in here would be libel and slander if Michael Jackson were not a dead person. I quite frankly find hypocrisy in those who publicly defend one person as innocent because a judge throws out the case (Ure) and then turns around and proclaims another guilty (Jackson) after he was tried in a "real" court of law and found innocent by a jury of his peers.

  • Someone in another thread listed Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson as the three celebrity deaths and asked who would be next. I suggest that the most likely candidates for mass suicides are BigJ's English teachers.

  • R.I.P. MJ

    June 26, 2009 at 4:39 p.m.

  • They dont even breed talent like his anymore.

    June 26, 2009 at 4:26 p.m.

  • Truly good people with "small names" die every day and we say nothing. I pray for his family but I don't believe having a big name will get him where he needs to be.

    June 26, 2009 at 3:43 p.m.

  • I love his music and talent...... no one will ever dance and move like him. He was a great entertainer. It's sad how he ended up, and my heart goes out to his children. I am not here to judge him in anyway, only to say he had amazing talent. RIP.

    June 26, 2009 at 1:46 p.m.

  • I think MJ was and always will be an icon, and for all of you that say you did not try on a shiny glove or imitate his dance moves are lyin'!! Unfortunately this man had a troubled life as a youngster and acted out because of it. I don't see how calling him a freak is even relevant the man is dead can he rest now?

    June 26, 2009 at 1:31 p.m.

  • Cindy..."For those of you with all the negative comments, he was a bigger name than you'll ever be."

Yeah, that's true. But then I've never wanted to be a big name. And, I've never tried to change my race or my sex. He started out as a black man and ended up trying to be a white woman -- an ugly one at that.

    June 26, 2009 at 1:31 p.m.

  • I love Michael Jackson!!! For those of you with all the negative comments, he was a bigger name than you'll ever be.

    June 26, 2009 at 1:06 p.m.

  • Michael Jackson was a dirt bag. I don't care how many copies one of his albums sold, he just can't be compared to Elvis Presley in terms of real talent as well as the total number of records sold.

I usually watch Fox news first then others for comparison, but I finally had to turn the TV off when even Fox went on and on and on about this weirdo.

I'm gonna have to stay away from the Red Lobster for awhile as I couldn't handle seeing his image in a pile of bird poop. LOL

AS far as not saying anything mean about ANY dead person, should people also remain silent about Hitler or Stalin or Idi Amin? Puulleeezzee, before the horrified reactions start, I'm not comparing MJ to those people - only to the comment that one shouldn't ever speak ill of the deceased.

As far as an adult MJ spending unchaperoned nights in the same bed, in a secret room with other people's children, how can anyone suggest that it "may" have been harmless since there were no other witnesses? What's the reason would a normal man want to do that?

I see that some posters are suggesting that MJ may have been sexually abused as a child as an excuse for his actions, If that's true, you've gotta wonder if the same thing happened to his brothers and sisters.

  • RUKIDDINGME: Maybe your comments are removed from time to time becaused they are laced with vile and meanness.

It's nice that you have an opinion, but you seem to take it to a personal level that makes me think you're an unhappy person with issues. I've read several comments you make about people (locally and nationally) and they appear to smack of envy and jealousy. Perhaps you should receive counseling about your anger. There are many free ones out there. Mid Coast, BTCO, Gulf Bend, etc.

    June 26, 2009 at 9:25 a.m.

  • I can ssure you, it wasn't me! I'm having a field day reading your opinions.

Stating facts is hardly a reason to remove a post, but then again, the Advocate doesn't want to allow hurting "anyones" feelings. Even if it is some of the worst our city or society has to offer.

  • John Wayne was a closeted homo with Tennesse Williams.

    June 26, 2009 at 9:12 a.m.

  • Viva MJ! Stupid, ignorant Victoria people.

    June 26, 2009 at 9:11 a.m.

  • I can't wait for Saturday to get here so this Freak is off the front page.
