Chris Papillion knows how he wants to celebrate the Fourth of July.
"There's going to be fireworks," Papillion said. "There's going to be a whole bunch of fireworks."
The fireworks Papillion has in mind don't have to be lit. Instead, the Victoria resident hopes to ignite them by lifting the most weight at the United States Powerlifting Federation's National Championships on Saturday in La Mirada, Calif.
Papillion is competing in the 242-pound division after winning at the Texas State Championships in Austin in March.
"All I have to do to do what I have to do is hit my best," Papillion said. "I've never lost in the 242-pound class. All I have to do is hit my opener and one of my second attempts."
Papillion had a dead lift of 772.5 pounds, a squat of 777.5 pounds, and a bench press of 595 pounds for a total of 2,096 pounds at the state meet. His bench press broke a state record that had stood for 20 years.
"I've been working out full time," Papillion said. "I'm just lifting in the gym and training as hard as I can. My numbers are way up from the March meet."
Papillion said he has bench pressed 635 pounds in the gym, which would break the American record of 628 pounds.
He'll go after the record on Saturday.
"You've got to block the crowd out," Papillion said. "You try to imagine that everybody's not there. It's just like the gym. You do what you do every day."
Papillion works out five days a week with trainer David Schachterle at Pure Fitness and Tanning in Victoria. Schachterle will join Papillion at the competition.
Papillion started powerlifting in high school at Stroman, where he finished fifth at the state meet in 1999.
He went on to win the junior division at the American Amateur Powerlifting Federation nationals in 2000.
"I'm ranked No. 2 in the nation and I have the best total out of everyone going to nationals," Papillion said.
A win Saturday would send Papillion to the world championships in Las Vegas in November and set off quite a celebration.
"I'm really looking forward to this meet," Papillion said. "This is the Pro Bowl of powerlifting."
