Islanders end Jaguars' win streak

CORPUS CHRISTI - The University of Houston-Victoria baseball team's eight-game winning streak came to an end in a 5-1 loss to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Wednesday at Chapman Field.
The Jaguars (20-11) outhit the Islanders (9-17) 6-5, but scored their only run in the second inning.
David Baker struck out and reached first base on an error by the catcher and went to second on a single by Leo Garcia. Baker took third on a fly out by Josh Darnell and scored on an error by the catcher.
A&M-Corpus Christi scored single runs in the first and fifth innings, two runs in the sixth and one in the eighth.
Austin Hitt, Darrel Stevens, Casey Newman, Rex Garner, Colter Zoch and Mike Arevealo pitched for UHV. Newman (1-2) took the loss.
Brett Gips of Yorktown pitched an inning of relief for the Islanders and earned the win. Gips yielded one hit and had two strikeouts. Bloomington's Phillip Garcia also pitched an inning of scoreless relief for A&M-Corpus Christi.
The Jaguars will play a doubleheader against Alvin Community College next Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Riverside Stadium.
